Summary: Power electronics switches are main components of power electronics converters. The term "switch" implies here functional units consisting of power semiconductor valves, drivers, snubber circuits and cooling components. When developed, a swich can be used in modular designs of various power electronics converters. Switches with unipolar and bipolar semiconductor valves have been investigated. The optimum fields of application of individual valves have been found having in view their voltage and current loads and operating frequencies. Besides valves, the investigations include also drivers and snubber circuits.

Research goals: The goal of the project is to attain the knowledge that is necessary for the development of power electronics switches to ensure their optimum application in power electronics converters. The current investigations are focused on power electronics switches with gate turn-off thyristors intended for usage in power electronics converters for traction vehicles and in switches with IGBT transistors in converters for AC motor drives. The switch configuration has been defined, and requirements on the project of the switch set. The project of single-phase inverter 400 kW with GTO thyristor has been made, and frequency converter for control of induction motors up to 30 kW completed.
