Summary: The project consists of several parts and the most important are: - Experimental and numerical fatigue life determiation of components and structures under variable loads and other service conditions, to the crack origin, - Experimental and numerical estimation of crack propagation with different crack forms and sizes (fracture mechanics). Welding errors are special treated as a place of crack origin and propagation, as well as their influence on fatigue strength of welded structures. - Experimental and numerical analysis of different repair methods for fatigue crack retardation or its stopping, due to extension of service life and avoiding the final failure, - Preparation of recommendations for improvement of fatigue strength at design stage, manufacturing and assembling, - The best method determination for successful (optimal) repairs of cracked large structures.

Research goals: The main goals of this project are: - systematization of service life estimation methods, for large metal constructions exposed to different forms of variable load, up to the origin of the first fatigue crack, - examination of all parameters, such as: production conditions (type and quality of weldments), cold deformation, residual stresses, material and shape of component, etc, - numerical estimation of service life under the variable loads, since initial crack to the final failure (fracture mechanics), for characteristic shapes of components and fatigue cracks, - analysis of existing procedures for fatigue damage repairs and determination of the most successful one as well as establishing the parameters for its optimal performance, - formulation of some recomendations for the procedures which can improve the fatigue strength (endurance limit) of structures in design, manufacturing and assembling stage
