Summary: The investigation deals with the possibilities of
eliminating unwanted characteristics of electroslag welded joints. Basic
theoretical ground is defined on the basis of which process parameters
would be modified. Through the results od experiments all neccessary
process parameters are defined in order to obtain finer grain structures in
the HAZ and to fully eliminate any need for normalization.
Research goals: The objective of this investigation is to first of
all enhance the cost effectiveness of the process through better weld and
HAZ structures after welding and elimination of normalization.
Experimenting with higher welding speeds with the addition of special
powdered filler materials along with the standard welding wire, all the
relevant process parameters will be investigated in order to find the right
combination that assures a thermodynamically stable process and gives the
right weld structures. A successful investigation would make it possible to
utilize this otherwise irreplacable method more cost effectively for
joining thick metal structures like in the production of generators and to
create new theoretical ground neccessary for the changeover from ordinary
construction steels to low alloyed small grained steels. Other information about the project.
