Summary: The paper reviews the activities to date and the results
ofcarried out investigations for the construction of the
wastewatertreatment plant for the city of Zagreb. Information on
theprepared design documentation of the construction of the Zagrebplant is
given. Results of investigations on the pilot facilityfor conventional and
adsorption-biological procedures areanalysed. For the continuation of works
on the design documents, criteria for discharged waters are proposed, as the
measure fordegree of wastewater treatment.

Summary: Untreated municipal and industrial wastes have been
dischargedinto Kastela Bay in Croatia for a number of years. As a
result, the ecosystem of the coastal sea has been significantly
damaged.Proposals have been made for the construction of a sewage systemfor
wastewater collection, transport, treatment, and dischargeinto the open
sea. Due to lack of funding, none of the largerfacilities has been
completed. Not only is such a system needed, but the existing industrial
plants on the bay need to be rebuilt.A regional development policy should
be directed, in particular,at improving and protecting water qality.

Summary: The assessment of environmental capacity is one of the
tools fordicision making in the selection of measures for sea
qualityprotection in semi-enclosed and enclosed coastal seas. Whenassessing
the environmental capacity, all of the processesaffecting the assimilation
or accumulation of anthropogenicmatter in the marine ecosystem should be
taken into account.

Summary: The paper points out that there is no organised waste
managementsystem in the city of Zagreb to meet European standards. Waste
isbeing disposed of in dumps which stand as a serious hazard to
themunicipal water supply system. Public communal hygiene, particularly the
selection of method for the final treatment anddisposal of waste, is
esential for the protection of health ofthe population. For that reason,
the kinds of waste, theirproperties, collection and transport, treatment
and disposalshould be known. This paper reviews some of the facts on
thissubject.

Summary: The essay is describing the problem of basic life
ecologicalsystem (air, water and soil) being polluted by waste matter asthe
result of growing number of inhabitants and development ofindustries,
especially chemical industry. The quantity of wastematter in the
problematic system is increasig steadily, and thelong years of non-caring
and non-solving of the problem haveresulted in numerous non organized dump
yards which are nowemitting poisonous and dangerous matters into the
surrounding.
The classification of the waste matter has been made, as well asthe survey
of processing and placing of waste matter by theprocedures used today. The
procedures can be grouped by themethods of processing to:
chemical-physical, biological, thermicmethods; the controlling can be
established of dumping of thewaste matter or remnants of the waste on the
grounds on which oneof the metods has been applied.
The special emphasis has been laid on the processing of the wasteas, in
itself, it is also a tehnological process and can bereleasing damaging
residues into the environment, therefore themost acceptable method for the
type of waste should be chosenthough respecting tehnical, economical and
enironmentalconditions.

Summary: The construction of new transport routes as well as
maintenanceof the existing traffic flows provoke undisered impacts on
theenvironment. The folloving impacts are particularly significant:air and
water polution, noise vibrations, reduction in estheticvalue of the
landscape and negative changes in the biosphere.Constant efforts are
reqired in order to reduce and preventunwanted influences. Undesired
traffic influences may be reducedby appropriate space planning, while
additional measures may betaken in order to control other unfavorable
influences.

Summary: The space we live in, the one we conquer and in which we
conduct various activities aimed at easing our lives is seriously
imperilled. The problem is global, and the efforts to protect the
environment and its elemental media have been exercised for almost thirty
years. Different understanding of environment and its multipurpose
exploitation requests integrated approach to solve the problem. The article
summarizes the inpact of building activities in the environment, and gives
the general criteria for the environmental evaluation. The environment can
be protected against an irreversible devastation only if the processes in
renewable natural capital are maintained within the limits of their
capacity, namely in ecological balance.

Summary: The river Drava is widely used as an energy source due to
its biglongitudinal bed sloping and the uniform annual discharge. Alongthe
entire river several dams were constructed or are planned tobe constructed
for the purposes of storage basins. The mentionedconstruction changes the
river regime as well as theenvironmental conditions which result in a
process ofeutrophycation and at the same time endanger the quality of
thewater. In the paper the factors influencing the mentioned changesare
discussed. Also the methods by which the process ofeutrophycation may be
decreased or declined are reported.

Summary: Waste may differ in composition depending upon its origin.
Wastequantity and composition depends upon numerous factors which varyin
space and time. There is certainly a link between theproduction and usage
of waste and the preservation of naturalresoureces, particularly water
quality. The fact that certainnatural riches, susch as water, are limited
in quantity and notrenewable, and that water quality upgrading, as well as
waterreuse for certain purposes, is very costly and problematical, commits
us to undertake all measures to preserve the naturalresources for our sake,
but also for future generations. Ofparticular interest here is the
knowledge of the environmentalrecipient capacity for individual elements
and compounds emittedby waste tretment plants, i.e. the awarness that
certainsubstances should never come into contact with the living worddue to
interference with it.

Summary: All civil engineering structures result in change of
theenvironment, and nature reacts in its own way; therefore, thereis a
constant interaction between the living nature and humancreations. The man
has bocome aware of the necessity to complaywith nature, avoiding violation
of nature, and has started toprescribe protective measures, construction of
additionaltechnologies, like water or air treatment plants or
impermeableunderlinig, which considerably increases the investment costs
ofconstruction. These active protection measures may often bereplaced by
passive measures wich, for example, throgh moresuitable choice of location
save considreable amounts of money, and adjust the structure to the
environment, allowing wastedisposal within the limits of environmental

interdependencies of these activities and theconceptual solutions. In this
paper the author first defines thecriteria for planning, construction and
use of waters forrecreational and sport activities. Further, the paper
discuss thepossibilities for development of actitvities on and around
thewaters of the city of Zagreb in Croatia, namely river Sava, gravel pit
lakes and river Odra. The issues discussed are sportsand recreation on and
in water, sports and recreation along thewater, and tourist offers. The
paper end by focusing on the issueof bio-ecological basis for the
development of areas along thesewaters for sports, recreational and tourist
facilities.

Summary: The coastal area of Adriatic sea is of special importance
for the development of tourism in Croatia. The disposal of wastewater is
usually carried out by marine outfalls with appropriate treatment.
Discharge of wastewater is permitted if conditions from Regulations for
Water Classification and Categorisation are met, i.e. "recipient standards"
are enforced. Considering that majority of the tourists coming to the
Adriatic are from European Community countries, the preparation for
defining the "effluent standard" according to the Council Directive of 21
May 1991 (91/271/EEC) have been made. The assesment of consequences of the
new Regulations will be presented.

with the aim to protect the quality of water in natural water systems, but
their effect on the environment is often negative in regard to air quality.
A systematization was carried out of all the effects of this type of object
through the changes in the municipal infrastructure, changes in the
ecosystem, changes in quality of water and quality of air. Elaborated are
the characteristics and sources of odors with emphasis on odors emanating
from equipment for treatment of waste water. Further there is description
of the spread of odors and also given are directions and steps for their
avoidance in other words treatment of odors.

Summary: When planning new drinking water demands, rich water
sources are often abstracted without serious ecological and economic
analysis. Applaying economic analysis on hypothetical example it was shown
that the cost for constructing a new water supplying mains can be fewer
times as expensive as using a close water source, that needs a
sophisticated and expensive treatment. Therefore, before deciding the water
supplying system construction, a multicriterion analysis is essential. Due
to illogical relationship between the participants in drinking water
management, susch analysis often fail.
