Summary: Untreated municipal and industrial wastes have been dischargedinto Kastela Bay in Croatia for a number of years. As a result, the ecosystem of the coastal sea has been significantly damaged.Proposals have been made for the construction of a sewage systemfor wastewater collection, transport, treatment, and dischargeinto the open sea. Due to lack of funding, none of the largerfacilities has been completed. Not only is such a system needed, but the existing industrial plants on the bay need to be rebuilt.A regional development policy should be directed, in particular,at improving and protecting water qality.

Summary: The essay is describing the problem of basic life ecologicalsystem (air, water and soil) being polluted by waste matter asthe result of growing number of inhabitants and development ofindustries, especially chemical industry. The quantity of wastematter in the problematic system is increasig steadily, and thelong years of non-caring and non-solving of the problem haveresulted in numerous non organized dump yards which are nowemitting poisonous and dangerous matters into the surrounding. The classification of the waste matter has been made, as well asthe survey of processing and placing of waste matter by theprocedures used today. The procedures can be grouped by themethods of processing to: chemical-physical, biological, thermicmethods; the controlling can be established of dumping of thewaste matter or remnants of the waste on the grounds on which oneof the metods has been applied. The special emphasis has been laid on the processing of the wasteas, in itself, it is also a tehnological process and can bereleasing damaging residues into the environment, therefore themost acceptable method for the type of waste should be chosenthough respecting tehnical, economical and enironmentalconditions.

Meeting: INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON RESEARCH ON HYDRAULIC ENGINEERING
    Held: from 09/07/92 to 09/09/92
Summary: Waste may differ in composition depending upon its origin. Wastequantity and composition depends upon numerous factors which varyin space and time. There is certainly a link between theproduction and usage of waste and the preservation of naturalresoureces, particularly water quality. The fact that certainnatural riches, susch as water, are limited in quantity and notrenewable, and that water quality upgrading, as well as waterreuse for certain purposes, is very costly and problematical, commits us to undertake all measures to preserve the naturalresources for our sake, but also for future generations. Ofparticular interest here is the knowledge of the environmentalrecipient capacity for individual elements and compounds emittedby waste tretment plants, i.e. the awarness that certainsubstances should never come into contact with the living worddue to interference with it.

Meeting: RADNI SABOR - GRADITELJI U OBNOVI HRVATSKE
    Held: from 06/25/92 to 06/27/92
Summary: All civil engineering structures result in change of theenvironment, and nature reacts in its own way; therefore, thereis a constant interaction between the living nature and humancreations. The man has bocome aware of the necessity to complaywith nature, avoiding violation of nature, and has started toprescribe protective measures, construction of additionaltechnologies, like water or air treatment plants or impermeableunderlinig, which considerably increases the investment costs ofconstruction. These active protection measures may often bereplaced by passive measures wich, for example, throgh moresuitable choice of location save considreable amounts of money, and adjust the structure to the environment, allowing wastedisposal within the limits of environmental capacity.

Summary: This work analyzes the possible effects of equipment for the cleaning of waste water on the environment. These objects are built with the aim to protect the quality of water in natural water systems, but their effect on the environment is often negative in regard to air quality. A systematization was carried out of all the effects of this type of object through the changes in the municipal infrastructure, changes in the ecosystem, changes in quality of water and quality of air. Elaborated are the characteristics and sources of odors with emphasis on odors emanating from equipment for treatment of waste water. Further there is description of the spread of odors and also given are directions and steps for their avoidance in other words treatment of odors.

Summary: When planning new drinking water demands, rich water sources are often abstracted without serious ecological and economic analysis. Applaying economic analysis on hypothetical example it was shown that the cost for constructing a new water supplying mains can be fewer times as expensive as using a close water source, that needs a sophisticated and expensive treatment. Therefore, before deciding the water supplying system construction, a multicriterion analysis is essential. Due to illogical relationship between the participants in drinking water management, susch analysis often fail.
