Summary: Primary geotechnical problems encountered today are ones
relatedto slope stability and underground openings. This is a result
oftechnological advances enabling construction of structures ofincreasingly
non-standard dimensions. The stability problem forartificial and natural
slopes is analyzed through investigationof existing structures (landslides,
dams, transport facilities,etc.). A particular accent is placed on drainage
as a method forincreasing the level of slope stability. Mathematical
proceduresfor analyzing landslide stability in two-dimensional
andthree-dimensional conditions are defined. The issue of solvingstability
problem of underground openings consists of defining anappropriate
methodology using integral design methods, optimizinginvestigation works
and establishing a proper balance with theprocessing level, i.e. with the
empirical, analytic andmonitoring approach.
