Summary: The general principles of designing town traffic areas are in the existing literature and prescriptions limited on the connection between vehicles and their speed on one side and the designing elements on other side. Other factors as geology, morphology, climate, urban inheritance etc. are not included. Here are the specialities of the Rijeka region analized from the point of view of designing town traffic areas. The general principles of designing are modified and complemented in accordance with the demand of the specific urban and other circumstances of Rijeka region.

Research goals: The purpose of this research is to find out the influence of the specific factors (geology, morphology etc.) of the Rijeka region. This knowledge will be used to complement the general instructions and prescriptions for the designing of town traffic areas, so that it will be adequated to specific needs of Rijeka. The expected share of this research is defining of the criteria for the general appreciation of the dependency of design elements from town specialities. This could be the basis (of course after similar research of other towns and their regions) for complementing the designing instructions and prescriptions generally, not only for Rijeka.
