Summary: This research work includes three areas of study : 1/
Historical survey of architectural performance space in Croatia and
Europe ; 2/ Survey of contemporary trends in both the construction of new
and renewal of old theatres in Croatia and Europe;3/ Basic criteria set
for the construction and planning of performance space. In the context of
the first two areas of studies a detailed atlas of theatre buildings and
other performance space in Croatia has been made up together with an
atlas of notable European theatre buildings. Typology of historic and
contemporary performance space in Croatia is defined from different
points of view, spatial and functional relationships together with the
architectonic characteristics of a building in its urban context being
looked into and compared with the relevant European types of the time.
Basic criteria set for the construction and planning of performance space
rely on both theoretical premises and practice in Croatia and Europe
taking into consideration specific features of some performance space
and its parameters. In this context highlighted is the adjustment of the
existing theatre buildings as well as the issues of performance space for
summer festivals taking into consideration the contemporary needs and
possibilities in this segment of Croatian architecture.
Research goals: The objective of this research is setting the
criteria for the analysis and appreciation of historic and contemporary
architectural performance space. Contribution of this researchwork is in
its study of some aspects of architectural performancespace issues that
have been insufficiently examined, unsystematized or unpublished so far in
either Croatia or Europe.Examination of the basic criteria and guidelines
for planning and design is taken as a departing point and theoretical
background of architectural practice. This leads to a much better
formulation of guidelines and the realization of objectives. They enable
proper decisions to be taken in the planning, design and programming of
performance space. Also, use, maintenance and different complex problems
of performance space for summer festivals are dealt with. The results of
this research up to this point have been thefollowing: - atlas of historic
and contemporary performance space in Croatia and Europe, - the Croatian
National Theatre in Zagreb - case study, providing a genesis study of a
characteristic type of a theatre building in the development of the
European theatre, - analysis of planning and design for the renovation of
such theatre building. Other information about the project.
