Summary: Arch.Kamilo Tončić was familiar with the work of Otto Wagner and his students from The Wagner-Schule. He knew Wagner believed the art existed for the people, not the people for the art. He knew for The K.K.Kunstgewerbe-Schule in Vienna where splendid lecturers were gathered. Among them were J.Hoffmann and K.Moser who in 1904 founded Wiener Werkstaette. Like J.Hoffmann who followed the steps of Ruskin and Morris, Kamilo Tončić followed the impulses from Vienna. With his collaborator Mrs.Marija Gattin Nonveiller he founded The Office for the Improvement of the Crafts. Kamilo Tončić tryed to ensure the high level of craftsmanship and artistic values in the products for everyday life. His work was the base, artistic, cultural, and economic that provided the conditions for modern production. Project "The First Appearance of the Notion Industrial Design in Croatia" gives the significance to the fact that in 1907 one school in Split had a name "Strukovna risarska škola"/"...fur Gewerbliches Zeichnen"/"...di disegno industriale". In order to reinforce the significance of that fact it is important to look for everything what was behind that title, what preceded, what was the context of the time, and what was left for the future.

Keywords: 1907, Split, Croatia, Architect Kamilo Tončić, School of Design, Arts and Crafts, Industry, the first mention of "the industrial design" in Croatia

Research goals: The main goal is to give the real value to the fact that 1907 one school in Split got the name School of Industrial Design. The objectives are: to define the context in which the school was formed, to define the formal structure of that project, and, implicitly, evaluate the outcomes in terms of our time. At the turn of the century in the region of Dalmatia a certain improvements were taking place thanks to the struggle of Croatian delegates. Those improvements were evident in all aspects of regional life. The improvements of crafts started the establishment of the middle class, the base of the modern society. That was a context for the fresh start in Dalmatia in the first decade of 20th century. After the First World War starts the slaw decay in a way that the absolutely up to date ideas from 1907 were changed for more traditional ones. But the year 1907 may represent the start of modern design in Dalmatia.
