Summary: Croatian knitting industry uses yarns of unsatisfactory quality. The project aims at investigating improvement of yarn quality and preparation for the process of knitting, as high quality yarn is a key prerequisite for obtaining a high quality knitwear. Critical yarn parameters to be investigated are: fibre blend, fineness, number of twists, chemical finishing applied and waxing quality. Their impact on finished product quality will be investigated. Existing yarns will be tested in detail and new ones constructed, of higher quality and better prepared for further processing. Knitting process speed increase is expected to be around 10%.

Research goals: Goals are determining optimal quality and structural parameters of cotton, wool, various blends (for example wool/PAC, wool/PES) and polypropylene yarns, as well as at choosing wax composition, manner of waxing and the quality of the wax applied, all in relation to the yarn properties. Final purpose is to improve yarn quality, and through better yarn to speed up the process of knitting, making use, among other factors, reduced friction coefficient. Investigation should result in better fibre blends, optimal twist factor and higher quality and higher stability waxing. Better yarn knittability is expected, higher knitting speeds, and, finally, higher quality knitwear. Possible incerease in knitting speed is 10%, and it should be accompanied with higher product quality.
