Summary: This paper reports an attempt to obtain insight into the
effectof organic acids and bases on the cathodic processes at Al inchloride
solutions. The corrosion is assumed to be caused by theeffect of OH- ions
formed from water upon cathodic hydrogenevolution. This is known to result
in hydration of the protectiveoxide film and chemical attack on the metal.
Hence, organicsubstances were expected to inhibit the corrosion by
consumingOH- ions as well as by an adsorptive effect. The substancestested
were HAc, HPro, HBut, HNic, TEA, Pyr, 3-Pic, 4-Pic, 3,5Lut, 2,6 Lut, 3,4,6
Col, 4-HP, 2,4 AMP, 2 AP i 3 AP. The besteffect was achieved by TEA, 2,4
AMP i 2 AP.

Summary: The effect of sodium diethildithiocarbamate (NaDDTC) on
thecorrosion of Cu Ni10 Fe alloy in seawater has been investigatedby means
of linear polarization, potentiostatic polarizationmeasurements and cyclic
voltammetry. In aerated and deaeratedseawater NaDDTC molecules act as an
effective inhibitor. Incontact with this chelating agent a sparingly
soluble complexwith Cu ions has been formed which probably diminishes
theporosity of corrosion product layer and so decreases oxygenreduction
rate.

Summary: Strain energy as a part of the Gibbs free-energy change
during the structural phase transition in small particles has been
analyzed. A special atention has been paid to those transitions
characterized by small latent heats and large volume changes (large strains
in the crystal lattice). Under assumption that the dilatation of the
nucleus of the phase just in formation causes plastic deformation of the
particle, a new expression for the strain energy has been formulated. It
shows that this energy may be greatly reduced if particles are sufficiently
small.

Summary: In this work attempts were made to extend the "potential
window"between anodic and cathodic corrosion of pure aluminium in
NaClsolutions i.e. shift the cathodic side of the "window" innegative
direction by adding some substances to the solutionwhich could act as
inhibitors. Two types of substances weretested: (a) weak acids acting by
buffering OH- ions formed duringcathodic evolution of hydrogen, thus
preventing hydration of theprotective oxide layer and (b) strongly
adsorbing basesinhibiting the process of hydrogen evolution at the surface
ofthe oxide. Both kinds of substances were found to shift thepotential of
fast increase of hydrogen evolution by a few hundredmilivolts.

Summary: The aim of this work was to study the influence of the
activechlorine on the corrosion of brass in chlorinated seawater.
Theexperimental results clearly indicated that at lower NaOClconcentration
(64 ppm) on the brass was formed some type ofprotective layer. With
increase NaOCl concetration (96 ppm, 186ppm) that layer would be broken by
the oxidizable action some ofdisproported product of the OCl- ion. On that
indicated decreasethe Rp values of the brass and its higher corrosion.

Summary: Efficiency of cerium salts as possible alternatives to
chromates for the inhibition of corrosion on the Al alloy used in food
processing industry has been examined. Total immersion tests and
electrochemical examinations have been used to determine inhibitor
efficiences and possible inhibition mechanisms. It has been found that
cerium chloride might be an efficient substitute for toxic chromates.
However, the problems of adhesion to that substrate call for further
examination aimed at adaptation of the method on application of conversion
and polymeric protective coatings.

in the industry and maritime affairs are one of the main factors that
restrain business efficiency and competitiveness. The ecological problems
in coastal zones that occurred as the consequence of application of
different corrosion-prevention methods are pointed out. The experiences of
Mediterranean countries in the improvement of protection procedures and
finding out more resistant materials suitable for construction in the
region are presented as well. The reasonable exploitation and protection of
equipment necessarily rely on the scientific and research activities, as
well as on the investments in development of research centres. They should
contribute to the transfer of modern technologies and therefore to the
faster development of the Republic of Croatia.

Summary: A new expression for strain energy is formulated for the
case ofnucleation of gray tin in white tin particles, characterized by
alarge increase in volume. It is shown that in small particlesstrain energy
has small values and does not prevent thenucleation. X-ray diffraction
analysis of the samples of smallSn-particles showed the absence of the
phase transition. Thisresult suggests that the influence of interfacial
energy onnucleation and phase transition in tin predominates the
influenceof strain energy.

compoundsas corrosion inhibitors to Cu Ni10 Fe alloy, the present
studydetermines the effectiveness of sodium diethyldithiocarbamate(NaDDTC),
which contains two active centers able to formcoordinate bonds with metal

cyclic voltammetryand potentiostatic pulse methods confirm that NaDDTC has
a goodinhibitive properties for this alloy in seawater. The
protectionproperties may be atributed to the adsorption of the molecule
onthe metal surface. Although during polarization the thyocarbamatemolecule

Summary: The composition of galvanostaticaly deposited films is pure
cuprous(I)oxide. In these disordered n-type films the "Hopping"
conductivity prevails. Thermoelectric and conductivity measurements support
such conclusions. The analysis of the photoelectrochemical behaviour of the
cuprous(I)oxide/electrolyte phase boundary is very difficult. The reasons
are: photodegradation, incoplete light absorption and recombination of
photogenerated carriers. The performance of the electrochemical
photovoltaic cell with cuprous(I)oxide electrode is given and discussed.

Summary: Great deal of attention has been recently paid to a number
of Al alloys in which aluminium is electrochemically active, e.g. with In,
Ga, Sn, etc. Use of aluminium as an active anodic material ha been
restricted due to a very resistant oxide film formed on its surface. So far
it has not been examined how the properties of this oxide film depend on
the previous cathodic polarization. This work has analyzed the behaviour of
the Al-Sn alloy at cathodic polarization up to high negative values of the
potential.
Keywords: Al-Sn alloy, oxide film, cathodic polarization.

Summary: In solutions containing chloride ions, corrosion in Al
alloys takes place as a local attack in most cases. Chromate compounds have
been proven to be efficient inhibitors of such corrosion, but, once their
cancerogenic properties have been discovered, efforts are being made to
replace them by less dangerous substances. This work has proven that
various salts of cerium, nicotine acids, and alcoholic extract of propolis
have inhibitor properties and can replace chromates successfully.
Keywords: Al-alloy, inhibitors, chromate compounds.

Summary: The properties of undoped and doped Al barrier films with
small quantities of Sn has been examined. Anodic oxide film on Al grows
linearly with increasing anodic potential. Presence of Sn stabilizes the
oxide film. Namely, increasing of Sn content in alloy increase the values
of oxide film resistance and thickness.

Summary: The results obtained from the time variation of open
circuit potential as well as from the polarization curves, Rp and cyclic
voltammograms suggest that Pseudomonas sp. primarlly affecton the cathodic
processes. Besides in some circumstances, these bacteria and/or their
metabolic products may act as corrosion inhibitors. They influence on the
dissolution of copper is markedly pronounced, as was established using AAS.
The aim of this work is an attempt to obtain more informations on the
influence of bacteria Sp. Pseudomonas on the corrosion potential evolution
for the CuNi10Fe alloy in seawater. The contaminated medium was prepared by
suspending bacteria, cultured on saline nutrient agar, in artificial
seawater.

Summary: The influence of addition of small quantities of tin to
high-purity Al (5N) on its electrochemical behaviour was investigated.
Cathodic current-time transients were recorded on Al-Sn alloys (0.02%,
0.09%, 0.2% and 0.4% Sn) in neutral 2M NaCl solution, when subjected to a
potential pulse from a potential around the open circuit potential to
different negative values. The charges required for oxidation of the
substances created during the cathodic process are discussed. In the aim of
identification of the alloy after cathodic polarization SEM micrographs and
EDAX analysis of samples were made.

Summary: Cathodic current-time transients were recorded on high
purityaluminium immersed into a neutral 2M NaCl solution when subjectedto a
potential pulse from a potential around the open circuitpotential, to
different negative values. The presence of somesubstances, other than
gaseous hydrogen, was detected and theirdeppendence on potential and
cathodic pulse duration isdiscussed. The yield of hydrogen formed during
cathodicpolarization was measured volumetrically as a function of
currentdensity and temperature. Attempts were made to extend thepotential
region between anodic and cathodic corrosion of Al i.e.shift the cathodic
side of that region in negative direction byadding some substances which
could act as inhibitors.

Summary: In this work the galvanostatic deposition of thin Cu2O
films ondifferent substrates (stainless steel, copper, SnOx on glass)
attemperature of 60 řC and at different current densities isdescribed. The
estimated film thickness varies between 3 and 5um. The dependences of
conductivity on temperature and lightintesity are examined and the
conductivity activation energy iscalculated. Open circuit voltage and short
circuit currentdensity are determined from the experimentally obtained
powercharacteristics of a photoelectrochemical cell. From theseresults Cu2O
conversion efficiency is also calculated. Theresults of investigations of
the electrochemical behaviour ofCu2O films by potentiodynamic and cyclic
voltammetry methods arepresented.

Summary: A new expression for strain energy is formulated for the
case ofnucleation of gray tin in white tin particles, characterized bya
large increase in volume. It is shown that in small particlesstrain energy
has small values and does not prevent homogeneousnucleation. This result as
well as the absence of phasetransition in samples of small Sn-particles are
basis for theestimation of completely unknown value of interfacial energy
andits influence on nucleation and phase transition in tin.

Summary: The effect of passivation potntial and the pH of the
solution on the properties of barrier films formed on high-purity Al (5N)
has been examined. The current-time responses were recorded and charge used
up during formation of the barrier film was determined. Imedance
measurments provided an insight into the characteristic sizes of barrier
films. The resistance and the thickness of the film were shown to increase
linearly with the increase in the potential, while the increase in solution
pH caused a marked decrease in the total system impedance. Current
efficiency of 25% indicates the formation of barrier films on Al to be
process which take place at great current losses. The mechanism of the
oxide growth has been examined within the framework of two "point-deffect"
models.

Summary: In order to determine appropriate aditions to aluminium for
it to become activated, the possibility of activation by tin was
investigated. The results were obtaind with two Al-Sn alloys (with 0.02%
and 0.4% Sn) which had been prepared on super-pure Al base (5N). It has
been observed that a low tin content causes aluminium to behave
hyperactively at high negative potential values, which leads to crevice
formation. The result of the change of potential in the negative direction
with the alloy containing 0.4% Sn is superactivation aluminium as
consequence of formation a separate tin phase in the aluminium
microstructure.

Summary: The aim of this work is to study the kinetic of oxide
growth and properties of relatively thin barrier films on high purity
aluminium in neutral and alkaline borate buffer solutions. This was done by
following the decay of the anodic current with time and by measuring the
impedance of Al/barrier film/electrolyte system. The resistance and
thicness of the barrier film increase linearly with increase in the
passivation potential. The current efficiency for film growth is only 25%.
The results were correlated with two point-defect models.
