    Babuš, Vladimir
    Publisher: Naprijed
    Number of references: 8
    Language: hrvatski
Summary: Beside definitions of accident and injury, the distribution of intentional and unintentional accidents and injuries was presented, together with the WHO data on mortality of injuries in the world.Accidents in developed and in developing countries were described separately.Furthermore accidents were divided according to circumstances of occurrence and they were described regarding population(age, sex, profession etc.),place and time of occurrence. By describing causes of an accident a person or environment was emphasized. Road traffic accidents were separately described, because they have the highest mortality portion in all accidents. Finally the suggestion for preventive measures on accidents has been given.
Keywords: Injury, accident, causes of accident, injury prevention.
Other: To je treće izdanje uđbenika "Epidemiologija" u koju ulazi i poglavlje o nesrećama.Knjiga je sada u tijeku pripreme za tisak.

    Pages: from 165 to 174
    Number of references: 25
    Language: hrvatski
Summary: The prevalence of respiratory symptoms and ventilatory capacitywere studied in 116 drivers and 119 mechanics. The drivers andmechanics demonstrated a significantly higher prevalence of mostchronic respiratory symptoms (CRS) than control workers.Amongdrivers smokers there was a significantly higher prevalence ofmost CRS than among non-smoking drivers.Drivers and mechanicswith more than 10 years of service also showed a higherprevalence of CRS than those employed for less than 10 years. These data for drivers and mechanics indicate that long-termemployment,particulary in combination with smoking, may cause thedevelopment of CRS and changes in lung function.

    Pages: from 73 to 78
    Number of references: 6
    Language: hrvatski
Summary: Epidemiologic research of injuries in road accidents in Croatia and Zagreb involving pedestrians, drivers and passengers shows a significantly higher mortality of elderly pedestrians (65 and over).Among injured, the highest incidence have children (7-14yrs) and then elderly pedestrians.Three models are briefly presented:Poisson process,Markov chain and Rank correlation model. Thesemodels use basic traffic variables:number of registered motorvehicles, motor fuel consumption, length of roads, cyclone appearance and weekly variations of traffic flow.A set ofpreventive measures are proposed:from ergonomic approach for the elderly to specific traffic education of the population.
Keywords: Prevention of traffic accidents, modelling, road traffic variables.

Summary: Mortality trends and distribution in a system of 32 general andteaching hospitals in the Republic of Croatia for the years 1966through 1989.By means of 13 elaborated and/or selected indicatorsusing hospital health statistics as a data base,we measured thechanges in the dynamics, structure and level of death atinstitutions, individual medical departments and among patients. Hospitals mortality statistics can provide a solid base for the evaluation of the quality of inpatient medical care,if thediagnosis of causes of death is improved, and methodology forsentinel-health-events adopted.

    Number of references: 15
    Language: hrvatski
Summary: In the elderly people health care a prevention is needed for all those conditions that lead to the deterioration of the maindisease and functional disabitlity.Among elderly people who needhealth care most frequent are the patients with long-standing illness and functional disability. In wartime it is important for an elderly person to take care of his health and to avoid risks as much as he can.Two of the important instructions are: -that elderly people try to prevent accidents by remowing anyobstacles and contamination and to repair as soon as possible the damages in their houses related to gas, electricity and fire; -that they be cautious in road traffic, especially in winter time.
Keywords: Health protection of the elderly, war circumstances, accident prevention.

Summary: Intoxication by herbs althouh less frequent in acute intoxicationin children, often causes vital danger and is more frequent thanregistered. It is more frequent in children because of their ten-dency to oral exploration.Children in Croatia are mostly intoxi-cated by:castoroil plant(Ricinus communis),deadly nightshade (At- ropa belladona)and thorn apple (Datura stramonium).Because of itshigh frequency, intoxication by fungi requires special treatment.Types of berries by colours are presented in tables. There areslightly toxic, fairly and highly toxic herbs according to the de-gree of toxin in herbs. The results of survey on intoxication byherb are presented. The importance of early dg.and prev.is stresed

    Journal: MEDICUS
    Number: 2/3

    Volume: 2
    Year: 1993
    Pages: from 147 to 211
    Language: hrvatski
Summary: The results based on the 11 year experience in the treatment of 2000 children with the acute poisoning, the gained knowledge in epidemiology, diagnostcs and treatment have been presented. The children were of both sexes between 2-5 years of age and they needed the hospital treatment due to the ingestion of the medicines from the home supplies in most cases, rarely because of the ingestion of chemicals or alcoholic drinks, and very rarely the ingestion of pesticides, plants or the poisoning caused by carbon monoxide.Due to the diversity of substances in the etiology of acute poisoning in children, we decided to exclude the chemical compounds for which there are no specific antidotes and for which only general detoxication and symptomatic treatment is possible. We prepared the practical instructions in order to rationalize diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, decrease insecurity of general practitioners and increase efficiency for the ill children. Each of the mentioned groups of poisons is described separately, the most common are throughly discussed and the latest knowledge from literature is cited. The possible measures for prevention found out during the mentioned period are suggested.

Summary: Childhood injuries are very common. The West Glamorgan injury database shows that one in five children attends a hospital accident and emergency department as a result of an injury each year and that roughly one in a hundred children suffers a fractured bone each year.Further analysis shows that there is a considerable fall off in attendance with increasing distance from hospital for almost all injuries, with exception of injuries resulting in fractures. This suggests that surveillance of fractures would be a useful indicator of injury occurence in a district and that the amount of work involved in collecting information of childhood fractures would be feasible for most districts.
Keywords: Children, bone fractures, injuries, accidents.
