Summary: Since changes in serum levels of different hormones,
especially sex hormones, and prostaglandins can affect the development of
atherosclerosis, the interrelationships of these supstances and serum
lipoproteins will be studied. The concentrations of serum lipoproteins and
apoproteins as well as prostaglandins PGI2 and TxA2 will be investigated in
patients with coronary heart disease, periferal arteries atherosclerosis as
well as retinal arteries atherosclerosis and correlation of these
parameters with the extent of disease will be studied. Serum concentrations
of lipoproteins in patients with hormonaly dependent disease breast cancer
will also be studied and the influence of hormonal treatmentof these
patients on their lipoproteins concentrations will be evaluated. The effect
of noise induced stress on different hormones will also be studied since
stress is considered to be important risk factor for atherogenesis.
Patients with kidney failure, especially those undergoing hemodialysis,
have much earlier and more severe atherosclerotic lesions than the
others. Therefore, the influence of renal fonction parameters and
hemodialysis on different hormones concentrations will also be studied. The
effects of different nutritive influences and antilipemic drugs on serum
lipoproteins and apoproteins concentrations will be studied as well in
order to get more informations not only about the development of
atherosclerosis but also about the possibilities of stopping the process or
even to achieve the regression.
Research goals: The geneal aim of the project is to contribute to
the understanding of interactions between serum lipoproteins and different
hormones, particulary sex hormones, and their role in the development of
atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease, stroke etc. cause more than 50% of
all the deaths in Croatia and in other western countries as well, the
importance of this problem could be clearly seen. At clinical level the
knowledge about hormonal and other metabolic changes connected with
atherogenesis would suggest the prognostic value of these parameters. Also
this project should give informations about atheroslerosis development in
arteries which were never studied until now ( eg. retinal arteries ), or
about which there are only few data ( peripheral arteries ). Almost nothing
is known until noww about the effects of noise induced stress on humans.
Therefore data about the effects of this type of stress to which many
people are exposed on hormonal levels could also provide valuable insight
into stress as risic factor for atheroslerosis. Other information about the project.
