Summary: A selected sample of patients of juvenile age was studied. They shared not only the common symptoms of inflammation, but also the incapability of isolating bacteria from the urine, or their insignificant isolation. The aim of the study was to examine influence of depolymerization of urinary sediment on bacterial cultivation using different concentrations of lauryl sulphate. The difference in the number of cultivated bacterial species before and after depolimerization was significant.

Summary: From ancient times to present day, from difficult times in the past to the siege of 1991, Dubrovnik has shown that its stone towers, arboretums and its people have always been the core of stability. The environmental health (water supply system, waste disposal) was already solved in 12 century; human rights, medical ethics and quality of life were developed even in the earliest legislation period. Importance of clinical medicine and health care brought to Dubrovnik many distinguished pharmacists and physicians from all over the world. Dubrovnik had one of the oldest pharmacies in Europe. Such a tradition was preserved also during recent siege in 1991.

Summary: An analysis of lipoprotein Lp(a) genetic markers was carried out in 3 subject groups: patients with prior myocardial infarction, their relatives and control groupof phenotypically healthy subjects. It could be concluded from the obtained results that the concentration of lipoprotein Lp(a) is an independent risk factor. Lipoprotein Lp(a) in relation to other known risk factors is specific because it is the "bridge" between thrombosis nad and atherosclerosis, and it is independent from any other analysed factors.

Summary: After an earlier analysis of mortality and causes of death in the rural community Belec for the period from 1977 to 1981, analysis was repeated for the period from 1983 to 1987. In the meantime, in the 1984, the Health Committee and the Guidance Clinic for Hypertension were founded, as important elements of Comprehensive Programme for Fighting Non-infectious Chronic Diseases in Basic Population Groups of Belec Study, started in 1981. The order of causes of death did not changes significantly in the period analyzed. However, 12% decrease of the crude death rate was noted, as well as the decrease of both cardiovascular diseases death rate (33%) and malignant neoplasms death rate (17%). Cerebrovascular diseases death rate increased for 3%. At the same time, data for the Republic of Croatia show an increase of 16% of crude death rate, as well as an increase of cardiovascular diseases death rate (24%) and malignant neoplasms death rate (11%). Results suggest positive impact of the Programme.

Summary: The experiences from the armed conflicts in the Balkans taught us that the persons and institutions marked with Red Cross were too often intentionally abused or attacked. From the above experiences, it is concluded that the technology of protection of the medical instituitions and workers is no more adequate. Hospitals are today the centres of sophisticated skills and methods for saving and prolonging live to a large number of people. In a modern war, a distinction between the battlefront and peaceful areas is lost and all hospitals become endangered. Because of that the authors popose a new technology of hopsital protection in conflict areas in nine principles.

Summary: The reasosns for research is the presence of PTSP and manifestation of specific gropu symptoms of POW's, taking into acount selected social, medical and war characteristics. The research was conducted on an accidental specimen found on 82 POW's who were liberated from Serbian war prisons. Using modified structured Watson's PTSP, questionaire, standards for establishmenting diagnosis of PTSP (acording to DSM - III -R) satisfy 70-85,7% of testees. These tests have been conducted more often here, than in any war camps in the world. They demonstrate distinctly inhuman treatments in Serbian war camps, uncompared in recent history.

Summary: Seeking an efficient intervention model for prevention of chronic noninfectious diseases, within the Belec Study a programme of early detection and treatment of hypertension was initiated. The aim of this programme was to increase the proportion of patients aware of their hypertension, of those under treatment and also of those treated successfuly. An intervention model was elaborated designed for rural communities with emphasis on seff-help, mutual help and co-help, with Guidance center and Committee for Health Promotion in the local community. The study comprised 1406 persons ove 18 years of age. At the first examination in 1981, a hypertension (+140/90 mm Hg) was registered in 810 persons, out of which 446 were examined again in 1988. In the course of 7-year programme, the proportion of those unaware of their hypertension decreased from 44.9% to 33.6%, the proportion of those inadequately treated increased from 22.6% to 28.9%, and of those who were treated satisfactory increased from 5.8% to 11.2%.

Title: PREDICTIVE VALUE OF COMPLEX VARIABLES IN EPIDEMIOLOGY OF ARTERIAL HYPERTENSION
    Faculty: MEDICINSKI FAKULTET ZAGREB
    Date of defense: 10/07/91
    Language: hrvatski
    Number of pages: 262
Summary: The aim was to explore possibility of constructing complexvariables which could serve as predictors of arterialhypertension and its consequences. Population of 1830 personsaged 40-75 were followed for 5 years. The strongest predictorsfor systolic blood pressure were complex variables carryinginformation on decreased physical activity, higher level of bloodsugar, lower alchocol consumption and obesity, and for dyastolicblood pressure obesity was the only and the strongest predictor.

Title: INFLUENCE OF SUBMINIMAL INHIBITORY CONCENTRATIONS OF ANTIBIOTICS ON THE ADHERENCE OF UROPATHOGENIC STRAINS OF ESCHERICHIA COLI
    Faculty: MEDICINSKI FAKULTET ZAGREB
    Date of defense: 03/24/93
    Language: hrvatski
    Number of pages: 295
Summary: Adherence inhibition is an attractive concept for prophylaxis andprotection against infection. The aim of this research was toexamine the effect of subminimal inhibitory concentrations ofceftazidime, ciprofloxacin and azithromycin on the adherence ofuripathogenic Escherichia coli. Therefore a new method fordetermining adhesive capacity of E.coli to green monkey kidney(GMK) cell monolayers was developed. All three agents reduced theadhesion of tested strains to GMK cells.
