Summary: Investigations will be carried out on 40 patients with Wilson disease applying ultrasound of the liver, CT and MRI of the brain, morphological changes will be established. Clinical and laboratory follow up of disease will be based on the neuropsychological examinations and SPECT too. The sensitivity and specificity of each diagnostic procedure will be established taking into account cost benefit. Estimating the sensitivity and specificity of each diagnostic procedure the time between the onset of symptoms and definitive diagnosis will be much shorter. This period might last, regarding our experience, even 3.5 years. The treatment with D-penicillamin and Zinc drugs will be evaluated using above mentioned diagnostic procedures.

Keywords: brain, Wilson's disease, liver, neurologic symptoms, computed tomography, magnetic resonance, atrophy, basal ganglia

Research goals: The aims of suggested investigations: 1) To examine morphological and functional changes in liver and CNS applying CT, MR, ultrasound of the liver, SPECT, neurophysiological procedures (evoked potentials, magnetic stimulation, tonometry) in the diagnosis and treatment of Wilson disease. 2) To make correlation between clinical status and morphological as well as functional disturbances. 3) To establish possible stages of morphological and functional disturbances by performing follow-up examinations. 4) To estimate the value of "free cooper" in serum, urine clearens of cooper and cooper concentration in CSF as a parameters in treatment evaluation. 5) To investigate changes of corticobulbar and corticospinal tract applying magnetic stimulation in patients with Wilson disease.
