Summary: Our scientific interest for selenium level in different biological material is directed especially regarding the aspect of its essentiality and antimalignancy. For this purpose was developed methodology for serum and urine selenium analizes using fluorometric method and atomic absorption spectrometry technique. With a view to study oxidation-reduction balance we carried out analizes of vitamin E and lipid peroxide in serum and tissue healthy and ill persons. This investigations are of special importance for observation frequency of tumour's growth progress. Frequency of serum and urine selenium distribution in control group healthy adult population was examined. Biological variations of specimens were followed regarding sex, ages and smoking habits of examined persons. Serum and urine selenium levels were determined in patients suffering from colorectal cancer. Obtained results affirm causal connection between cancer appearance and selenium level in organism. Level of serum selenium, vitamin E and lipid peroxide were analysed also in malignant womans breast tumours. The results we obtained validate hypothesis that above mentioned parameters contribute to initial woman's breast cancer diagnosis.

Research goals: Ours project "Selenium in health and disease" turned out that selenium level in blood of adult population and children from area of Zagreb is low and from this point view our country isclassed among states with lowest selenium level in Europe. It confirm examinations of selenium content in the river sediments,the soils and cereals because of selenium analyses are of special interest for Croatia. Former investigations included analyses of serum and urine selenium level in healthy adult population, selenium determination in benign and malignant tumour's tissues as also examinations of selenium level, vitamin E and lipid peroxide inconsideration of its role in oxidoreductione balance regulation . In continuation of our research we predict determination of selenium level in determined metabolic disturbances and diseases of different ethiology together with examination of correlation with various microelements (zinc, magnesium, nickel) in respect to therapy and diagnostic effect. We plan our research on cell cultures, tissue homogenates andbody fluids.
