Summary: Principles of histological classification and
radiotherapy ofthe gliomas are disscussed. The importance of early
diagnosis ofthis tumors is pointed out, as well as the value of
goodpostoperative radiotherapy.
Postoperative radiotherapy is essential in the treatment ofgliomas
because surgery alone gives much lower survival rateresults.

Summary: Twenty patients with histologicaly cnfirmed medulloblastoma
weretreated postoperatively. It can be concluded with 90% probability
that radiotherapy to the whole central nervous system is more
successful the the tehnique of irradiation to the tumor bed andthe spinal
cord. Sex, age, site and the extent of surgery did notprove to have any
statistical significance in a survival of thesepatients.

Summary: 148 patients with malignant (106) and semimalignant (46)
glioma were treated at the Clinic of Oncology, Rebro, Zagreb, Croatia, from
1969 to 1982. All the patients had some form of surgery before
radiotherapy. In glioblastoma pts. significantly better 1 year survival
rate is achieved if the patients are irradiated by large fields (p<0.001).
The results of treatment of semimalignant gliomas are better than those of
malignant gliomas (p<0.001, 5 ysurvival). In semimalignant gliomas 5 years
survival rate appears to be betteer if chemotherapy is applied in addition
to radiotherapy (p<0.01).

Summary: 201 patients with cerebral metastases treated at the Univ.
Clinic of Oncology and Radiotherapy Rebro, Zagreb, Croatia, over 10 yeasrs
from 1978-87 are discussed. Singnificantly better survival rates are showen
in female pts. with breast carcinoma (p<0.001), and generaly in the patints
with a longer symptom-free period up to diagnosis of the secondaries in the
brain (p<0.001). Considering the therapy the best survival results were
obtained in patients treated by the combination of surgery, radiotherapy
and chemotherapy (p<0.001).

Summary: 110 patients (68 male and 42 female) with cerebral
metastaseswere treated at the Institute of Oncology Rebro during theperiod
1978-1984. Most patient were aged 50-60 years. 52/110patinets were treated
by radiotehrapy, and 58/110 by radio pluschemotherapy. In the group of 52
patients treated by radio-therapy alone the median survival was six months
(1-16 m), i.e.the same as in the group treated by both radiotherapy and
chemo-therapy (1-26 m).

side as during AP/PA total body irradiation. Differentphantom dimensions in
volume and sizes (AP=12-32 cm), lungcross-sections (25-400 cm2), chest wall
thickness (2-9 cm) andlung densities, were found to influence the mid-plane
correctionfactor. The corresponding values and the presentid

Meeting: OECI Conference on Cancer and Quality of Life
Held: from 05/12/95 to 05/14/95
Summary: The quality of life of the patients with cerebral
metastases is of growing importance in modern clinical oncology because of
prolonged survival of the pts. with different malignancies. In spite of
poor prognosis, an adequate multimodal approach to the treatment may
produce a significant imporovenment of thesurvival as well as of the
quality of life for some patients. 201 pts. with cerebral metastases with
Karnofsky perfomance index >=60 are disscused in the therm of imporvement
of the neurological status an the general condition after the surgery,
radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy.

metastases
Faculty: Medicinski fakultet Zagreb
Date of defense: 07/05/95
Language: hrvatski
Number of pages: 96
Summary: The effects of treatment of 220 patients with cerebral
metastases are discussed. The survival dicreased exponentially and was
42.7% at 6 months, 20.5% at 12 months, 7.3% at 18 and 3.2 % at 24 months.
The age, primary breast carcinoma, solitary metastases and the lengths of
the symptom free period prooved to be significant prognostic factors. The
best results were achieved if the patients were treated by surgery,
radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
