Summary: The investigation of ionizing radiation in the environment
forms the bases for the evaluation of the present state of radioactive
contamination and the solution for the foreseen future nuclear accidents.
This should give the most important data for the fission products
evaluation based on the amount of the fission radionuclides present during
the migration and their retention in soil. In addition this data will be
used for the evaluation of the current transfer factor values of the food
chain. In addition to the fission radionuclides study the influence of the
natural radionuclides on the environment is investigated. They are the
after effects of technological development. Their migration during coal
combustion is followed on a specific waste pile of ash and slag. A
specially important is the dispersion of radon and its daughter in
apartments where such slag is part of building material. On the bases of
all the collected experimental data the risk for human health will be
evaluated and the internal contamination of people with fission and
natural radionuclides will be calculated. Eventually, the radiation dose
per capita in the Republic of Croatia will be calculated. The
investigations directed on nonionizing electromagnetic radiation should
add to enlarge the fund of knowledge of exposure risks especially
concerning professional exposure. Evaluating the results of
epidemiological studies the most convenient parameters are chosen for
health control of professionally exposed people and protection measures
are planned.
Research goals: The investigation of ionizing radiation serves for
the diminishing of the after effects of nuclear accidents. The severest
effects of the Chernobyl accidents due to the variation of fallout
distribution is soil contamination. The project collaborators are
investigating the transfer and diffusion of radionuclides in soil. The aim
is to define the transfer of the radionuclides in cultivated and
uncultivated soils as well as in flora and fauna. It is expected that
radionuclides transport in soils radicularelly will be decreased through
application of phosphate fertiliser. The environmental contamination
through migration of uranium descendants through industrial waste piles is
being defined, as well as the diffusion of radionuclides inthe system:
waste pile - soil - trickling waters - costal waters. The investigation
will serve for the evaluation of radionuclides evaluation in the alimentary
chain (bioindicator - venison). The application of slag in building
material increases the radioactive contamination in dwellings. For that
reason radon is investigated. The impact of nonionizing radiation sources
on human health is investigated on the basis of the epidemiological
studies. Healths control is proposed for workers exposed to electromagnetic
radiation.
