Summary: Within this project the following analytical,
physic-chemical and biomedical studies on various aspects of metal
impact on health have been performed in the past four and half year
period: - development of analytical methods for determination of metals
(Pb, Cd, Hg, Al and Se); - monitoring of toxic metals in environmental
and human biological matrices; - the molecular-mechanical
conformational analysis, spectroscopic and potentiometric research on
copper complexes; experimental studies on rats on new therapy for
reducing the body burden of lead, cadmium and mercury; - experimental
studies on reproductive and perinatal effects of lead and cadmium; -
experimental studies on influence of cadmium on transport mechanisms in
cellular membranes; - human studies on evaluation of biological
indicators in environmentally exposed sensitive populations (women and
children); - reproductive effects of lead and cadmium in men; - kidney
function of occupationally exposed population to lead; - influence of
diet on lead absorption. The results of this project have been published
in: 78 papers in scientific journals (63 cited in CC), edited one
book, 7 chapters in books, 37 scientific papers in congress proceedings
(28 international and 9 national), 82 abstracts from various meetings, 4
Ph.D. Theses and 4 M.Sc. Theses.
Research goals: The aim of this project was to evaluate the extent
of exposure of our population to metal contaminants in the environment, to
evaluate adequate biological indicators of exposure and to estimate
possible health effect. This goal was approached from different aspects;
analytical - set up or improvement of methods for various metal analysis
in different biological and environmental matrices; basic physicochemical
approach - study on structure of metal-organic ligand complexes;
experimental approach - reproduction studies, testing of new chelators for
reducing body burden of metals, study of carcinogenic and mutagenic effect
of chromium and nikl, introduction of new biochemical approach to study
toxic effect of metals in kidney brush border membranes and
epidemiological approach - studies of different segments of normal or
occupationally exposed populations.
