Summary: Of the most important aspects of tissue analysis is adequate preservation. It can be achieved through the formation of thetumor bank that will allow fast and complete analyses of relevant parameters. The specific aim of the proposed project is to evaluate different modern and relevant experimental oncology methods for preservation of tissue samples stored in the tumor bank. Investigation will include morphological, kinetical, cytometrial, biochemical and genetical analyses. The result of this project will be establishment of the normal and tumor tissue bank. Simultaneously, the bone and cartilage samples bank will be formed. In the near future, all samples stored in the bank will be, under precise conditions, available for research purposes. SUMMARY OF THE FINAL REPORT Project "Establishment of human tumor bank for basic research" (broj: 3-01-178) is fully accomplished according to proposal. Main results are: 1.Establishment of Croatian Human Tumor Bank (CHTB) containing tumor tissue preserved on ultra-low temperatures and collected from different clinical sources. CHTB is located in Division of Molecular Medicine, Ruđer Bošković Institute. It is equiped with appropriate equipment, scientific staff and technologies. 2. In the framework of the project the initiative toward forging a cooperative network of human tumor banks in countries of Central and Eastern Europe passed a significant milestone in Zagreb, on November 10, 1994, when the participants from 15 countries adopted the Charter of the Zagreb Initiative for the Central and East European Human Tumor Bank Network (HTBN). 3. Thirty seven scientific papers were published in international scientific journals, as well as 3 books. Two international meetings about Significances and Perspectives of Human Tumor Bank and New Aspects of Molecular Medicine were organized. In the framework of the project 5 master degree tesis, and 1 Ph.D. thesis were defended. Three papers about structure and organization of CHTB were published. 4. Participant of the project have established good scientific collaboration with University Clinic Eppendorf - Hamburg and College of Medicine, University of Cincinnati.

Research goals: The lack of properly preserved malignant and matched normal human tissue has been one of major obstacles for cancer-related research. In an effort to provide investigators with well-documentated tumor tissues for cancer research, the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts and the Division of Molecular Medicine at Ruđer Bošković Institute established the project Croatian Tumor Bank (CTB) that is based on the U.S. Cooperative Human Tissue Network (CHTN). CTB collects various tumor and normal tissue samples, mostly from rountine surgical resections. The protocol for the collection of specimens is developed in consultation with our colleages from the University of Cincinnati. A final goal is to establish Central and Eastern European Human Bank Network.
