Summary: The subject of the project is the research concerning corneal transplant storage preserving the vitality of the corneal tissue and preventing the secundary infection. Beside the laboratory work the project is also dealing with clinical aspect of corneal transplantation: selection of the patients and surgical methods, postoperative follow-up with special attention being paid to the possible immunological reaction causing complications and reject of the transplant. The results of this multidiscipline research are presented in numerous publications.

Research goals: The aim of this project is to adopt corneal heterotransplantation surgical technique and to establish the basis for the future human eye bank. It was necessary to start with the experimental part of the project consisting of the short term corneal transplant storage in rabbits using specific media. specific media. The results of the surgery were followed clinically and at the and of the experiment hystopathology was performed to test the local reaction to the heterotranplant. After the experimental phase, microbiological survey of human donor tissue was done in order to assess the optimal antibiotic administration protocol for the protection of the tissue during storage . The adequate hardwer and softwer was developed to achieve impeccable information flow to the other hospitals performing corneal transplantations as well to the other centers in Europe /Eurotranplant organisation/
