Summary: Early detection and staging of expansive processes is of
mayor importance in the decision of proper therapy planning. The
possibility of magnetic resonance imaging and computerized tomography in
the detection and staging of neoplastic desease will be evaluated. The
patients with liver infiltartion, adrenal, kidney, prostate, pancreas and
bladder tumors will be analysed. High CT sensitivity is based on the
electronically measured difference of the normal and pathological tissue
densities. Advantage of MR imaging is based on the fact that signal tissue
intensities are dependent on more parameters than any other radiological
technique. MR imaging demonstrate proton density, T1 and T2 relaxation
times describing chemical and physical enviroment. These enables high
sensitivity of the focal lesion detection of parenchymal organs. Equisite
possibility of MR imaging in the vessel demonstration is due to high speed
velocity of blood stream resulting in the intravscular loss of signal. The
result is high contrast which enables vessel demonstration without use of
contrast material. Comparative studies of CT and MR possibilities in the
detection of tumor like lesions and staging are in progress in many
institutions. Comparative analisies of sensitivity and specificity of both
methods in the detection of focal lesions and staging will be aim of the
study.
Research goals: There are severel goals of the study. Determination
of best imaging sequence for diagnosis and staging of abdominal and pelvic
pathological changes on o.2 T low-field imaging device regarding spin-echo
and inversion recovary techniques. Comparison of sensitivity and
specificity of CT and MRI, with idea to determine the method of choice for
abdominal and pelvic pathological changes. Evaluation of paramagnetic
contrast media and possibility of shortenig imaging time by its use.
Evaluation of sensitivity and specificity in differential diagnosis of
various abdominal and pelvic pathology using GD-DTPA. Improving sensitivity
and specificity of computerized tomography with contrast media in the
diagnosis of abdominal and pelvic pathology. Staging of kidney tumors and
possibility of differentiation mmalignant from benign tumors. Evaluation of
magnetic resonance imaging in the differentiation of afunctional from
functional adrenal tumors as well malignant from benign. Evaluation of
computerized tomography in the differentiation of adrenal tumors on the
basis of lesion density. Education of young radiologist, residents with
introduction into scientific work. Work on the master of science thesis as
well on the PHD thesis.
