Summary: Lyme disease caused by Borrelia burgdorferi is spread all over the world. By analogy we consider that Lyme disease is also present in the Northwest of Croatia. Problems with different clinical symptomatologies, difficulties in diagnosis and in therapy have been determiners in the first part - during two years period - of our investigation. The mycrobiologic procedure of isolation of cause and serologic IHA, IFA, and ELISA methods are used. The cooperation with clinical physician is obligation. Lyme disease was proved in 30 per cent of our patients. In the second part (three years period) of investigation the ecologic factors important for spreading of disease (isolation of etiologic agent from Ixodes and rodents) will be analysed. The multidisciplinary approach to sick persons will be continued.

Research goals: 1. Improvement and acceleration of clinical and microbiological diagnosis of Lyme disease. 2. Determination of local pathognomonic titer of antibody in Lyme disease within the population of Northwest Croatia because of "autochthonuos" antigen structure of Borrelia burgdorferi. 3. Proving the ecologic biotopes and reservoirs of Ixodes and Borrelia burgdorferi. 4. Blocking the transfer Borrelia burgdorferi from one host to another. 5. Providing information about early symptoms of disease and possibile consequences of chronic infection.
