Summary: The efficacy of sclerotherapy in arresting bleeding
fromoesophageal varices was investigated on the basis of recurrentbleeding
and mortality in children with prehepatic portalhypertension. In the control
group mortality was as high as 40%,while none of the patient died in the
sclerotherapy group.Futhermore, the incidence of rebleeding in the
sclerotherapy groupwas reduced by 53% compared to the control group.Using
themaximum likelihood method and robust statistics it was shown thatthe
advantage of sclerotherapy is statistically significant.

Summary: The usefulness of H2-receptor antagonist drug therapy
wasinvestigated for the prevention of esophageal varices bleeding
inpatients who underwent sclerotherapy.According to randomization, out of
the 58 patients, 28 received ranitidine and 30 placebo. Onthe basis of
results it was concluded that the prophilactic useof H2-receptor antagonist
is not justified in this case.
Keywords: sclerotherapy, esophageal varices, prophylactic use of H2-receptor antagonists

Summary: Injection sclerotherapy and laser photocoagulation are
equally effective in achieving definitive hemostasis in bleeding peptic
ulcers. Laser photocoagulation is more effective in patients with active
bleeding, whereas injection sclerotherapy is more effective in patients
with a nonbleeding visible vessel.
