Summary: Scientific research to accomplish three basic tasks: 1. Diagnostic-to create a diagnostic program with selected old and new testings and new ways of connecting and explaining of findings. Numerical data are needed for each function and each level of the auditory pathway for individual evaluation, deterioration depending on age and improvement granted to rehabilitation, and for statistical analysis. Since presbyacusis is one of the effects of the infirmmities of age, vestibular and speech testings, psychological, physiatric, neurological, psychiatric, ophthalmological and sociological testings specific for elderly are needed. 2. Rehabilitation-on the base of the total functional diagnosis to create a specific rehabilitation program of hearing and other impaired functions such as: speech (in its realization and quantity), balance, physical and psychic abilities, memory, socialisation, motivation, general communication, integration and quality of life. It is expected to achieve a two-way impact on all the functions, e.g. that physical therapy or vestibular exercises improve hearing and vice versa. There is no presbyacusis rehabilitation without rehabilitation of complete age infirmmites. 3. Telephone adaptation-to enable use of telephone network with changes on the telephone apparatus in the available frequency band from 300 to 3.400 Hz: a)amplification of low frequencies, b) changes in frequency characteristics according to individual needs, c) to transmit telephone signals (ringing and other standard telephone signalization) into frequency area with better audibility.

Research goals: According to the principle that presbyacusis affects all the levels of the auditory pathway and that it is one of the effects of the infirmmities of age, the goals were: 1. to select the modes of testing the functions along the whole auditory pathway from receptor to cerebral cortex as well as the testing for the evaluation of the speech changes in elderly persons, 2. to create special apparatuses and facilities for those testings that cannot be done by standard apparatuses, 3. to create a specific anamnestic questionnaire for diagnostic testing of hearing and speech function with all their characteristics, 4. to include into diagnostic and rehabilitation other medical areas dealing with geriatrics, 5. to investigate if there is a two-way impact of some functions, and two-way effects of rehabilitation, 6. to develop additional procedures within the verbotonal method of rehabilitation of hearing and speech for improvement of hearing and speech, 7. to create a rehabilitation protocol with specific effects on the most impaired hearing functions, 8. to learn whether it is possible to improve hearing and speech in elderly persons, 9. to establish the difference between the audibility of signalization and intelligibility of speech when using standard telephone, 10. to improve the intelligibility of speech by special construction of the telephone apparatus without intervention into the standard transmiting ot the telephone network.
