Summary: There is a very strog and convincing evidence in the
literature about the association of various dermatologic, neurologic,
rheumatologic and cardiologic diseases and the Borrelia burgodrferi (Bb) as
a causative agent. However, such data have been consistently reviewed for
Croatia and systematic investigation has not been carried out until these
days.In Serologic Laboratory of our Department, ITP and FTA tests for
syphilis have been routinely performed since 1954 and 1963. As the
techniques for assesment of Bb are similar to certain extent, it was
decided to introduce the diagnostic procedure for Bb. The propoposed
investigation is planned to be carried out in order to detect the
antibodies against Bb by indirect immunofluorescence, isolate and cultivate
our own Bb, highly specific for our midst, produce our own antigen and
isolate Bb from ticks from various localities.Furthermore,Bb should be
assessed more precisely as the causative agent of various skin and systemic
disorders in humans.
Research goals: -to define the biologic characteristics of Bb in
Croatia -to recognize the various clinical manifestations of Lyme-disease.
Special attetntion will be given to skin manifestations of Lyme disease,as
they appear to be different to certain degree, depending on the part of
the world. -to assess more specific and more sensible diagnostic tests for
the diagnostic of Lyme disease, -to cultivate our own Bb from the
biological material, highly specific for Croatia, -to produce our own
antigen -to obtain the epidemiologic data forLyme-disease in Croatia -to
improve the diagnosis and treatment of Lyme disease in Croatia
