Summary: Any psychic or somatic illness disturbs the biological,
psychological and social integrity the patient's personality. Changing the
psychic and physical structure of the patient's personality, the disease
brings abaut patient's new attitute towards the environment and vice versa.
Due to the increasing number of somatic patients, the emphasis is laid on
the adequate approach to help them find a possibility of living in such a
way that a higher quality of life is achieved. In the authors opinion, the
disorders of respiratory organs may well serve as model for testing the
effects of patients own evaluation and the importance of somatic phenomena
on the social functionality and the quality of the life of the patients. In
view of this, we have examined three groups consisting of 100 patients
each. The patients in these groups suffered from cronic obstructive lung
disease, lung tuberculosis and lung cancer, respectively. The results of
the investigation could be used to provide a possibility of planning and
conducting adequate measures for a better quality of life of the
aboveementioned patients.
Keywords: psychological and social adaptation, quality of life, chronic obstructive lung disease, lung tuberculosis, lung cancer.
Research goals: For the evaluation of the psychological and social
adaptation, i. e. social functionality and quality of life in the patients
suffering from the respiratory diseases, the following components were
investigated: 1. the patients were observed after the incidence of the
disease in relation to what degree they were able to recognize and to
ascribe importance to the symptoms, to note their seriousness and in
relation to the possibility to adapt themselves a) in the family, b) with
regard to the healthy measures to be applied, c) socially, d) emotionally,
e) at work to the new situation. 2. With regard to the three
above-mentioned lung diseases, the objective was to determine the
correlation between the external circumstances under which the patients
live with the extent of their social and physical disablement, as well as
with the extent of their adaptation, while complying with the way of
behaviour of the environment they belong to. The contribution of the
investigation lies in the fact that this is the first investigation of such
a kind in Croatia in terms of the theoretical starting point, the choice of
the sample and the instruments applied.
