Summary: The efficacy and the safety of azithromycin 1.0 g as a
single oral dose to treat uncomplicated urethritis in men is compared with
the treatment with doxcycycline 100 mg twice a da, for seven days, Of 143
patients reruited into the study, 131 were followed up for two weeks. Of
the evaluable patients 66 were treated with azithromycin (25 with
gonorrhoea and 41 with chlamydial urethritis), 65 were treated with
doxycycline (28 with gonorrhoea and 37 with chlamydial urethritis).
The diagnosis of urethritis gonorrhoica was made by microscopy of a Gram
stained smear and confirmed by culture, while the diagnosis, of chlamydial
urethritis was based on a direct immunofluorescent method.
After two weeks the cure was ashieved in 96.96% of the patients treated
with azithromycin and in 87.69% of the patients treated with doxycycline
(p<0.05).
Side effects showd similar pattern in both treatment groups. The low
incidence of side reactions and efficacy observed with azithromycin make
this therapy a significant addition in the therapy of urethritis.
