Summary: Physical work load was estimated in a female conveyor-belt worker in a botting plant. Estimation was based on continuous measurement and on calculation of average heart rate values in three-minute and one-hour periods and during the total measuring period. The thermal component of the heart rate was calculated by means of the corrected effective temperature, for the one-hour periods. The average heart rate at rest was also determined. The work component of the heart rate was calculated by subtraction of the resting heart rate and the heart rate measured at 50W, using a regression equation. The average estimated gross energy expenditure during the work was 9.6+/-1.3kJ/min corresponding to the category of light industrial work. The average estimated oxygen uptake was 0.42+/-0.06L/min. The average performed mechanical work was 12.2+/-4.2W, i.e. the energy expenditure was 8.3+/-1.5%.

Summary: In this paper, the authors tried to establish the association of alcoholism with arterial hypertension as well as with risk factors for atherosclerosis, which are invariably accompanying arterial hypertension, in engine-room personnel (N=80), in other seamen of the "Jugolinija" (N=119), and in the control group which was made up of employees of the Technical Department of Shipyard "3. maj" Rijeka (N=108). The x2-test showed a statistically significant difference in the prevalence of alcoholism, and the t-test a statistically significant difference in the daily consumption of alcohol between the two groups of seamen and the control group. The prevalence of alcoholism and the daily consumption of alcohol were higher in groups of seamen. Similarly, arterial hypertension was more prevalent and systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were higher in the two groups of seamen compared with the control group. Since there were no significant linear correlations between the alcohol consumption and SBP and DBP, it could not be said that higher values of SBP and DBP were positively related to the greater consumption of alcohol in seamen as compared to the control group. No significant linear correlation was found between alcohol consumptiom and studied risk tension in alcoholics among the engine-room personnel suggested some association of the alcohol consumption with arterial hypertension.

Title: Varicose veins of lower limbs in female catering workers

    Authors:
    Kontošić, Ivica

    Journal: Medicina
    Number: 2-3

    Volume: 28
    Year: 1992
    Pages: from 94 to 100
    Number of references: 20
    Language: hrvatski
Summary: In this paper the influence of possible risk factors on the occurence of varicose veins was analyzed in 207 female catering workers aged 48.0+/-9.1 years, with an average total length of service 19.0 +/-8.2 years and with specific length of service 17.0+/-8.1 years and with specific length of service 17.0+/-8.1 years. The data were obtained by polling and by physical examination, and statistically analyzed by hi-square test. The varicose veins prevalence in female catering workers was 41.5% A significantly larger prevalence was found in the older age groups, in subjects with varicose veins in family medical history , as well as in subjects with flat feet, with larger lower leg or upper leg circumference and with higher body mass index. Varicose veins were a bit more often represented in subjects with longer total and specific length of service, but the differencies in the varicose veins prevalence in subjects were not significant either with regard to the number of pregnancies or the number of deliveries, which suggests a non-professional character of the disease. A certain tendency to the larger prevalence of more serious forms of disease, though statistically non-sugnificant, suggests a chronic and progressive character of the disease. This research reveals the importance of paying attention to the known risk factors on the occasion of the first professional orientation of the candidates in catering professions, as well as on the occasion of the employment (professional selection).

Title: The influence of risk factors on the occurrence of arterial hypertension in workers of professional fire-brigade

    Authors:
    Kontošić, Ivica

    Stipanović, Milorad
    Journal: Medicina
    Number: 1
    ISSN: 0025-7729
    Volume: 28
    Year: 1992
    Pages: from 25 to 32

    Language: hrvatski
Summary: In this epidemiological study the authors analyzed the relationship between some risk factors and arterial hypertension in 45 firemen, with average age of 36.2+/-8.1 years; in 26 fire-brigade drivers, with average age of 43.1+/-6.0 years and in the other employed in professional fire-brigade, with average age of 44.7+/-6.0 years. Data were collected by surveys, by anthropometric measurements and by physical examinations. They were analyzed by X2-test, by Stdent's t-test and by calculation of linear correlation coefficients. Arterial hypertension was found in the 11.1% firemen, in 7.7% fire-brigade drivers and in 37.5% of other employed in professional fire-brigade. There were no differencies in prevalence of hypertonic values of systolic and diastolic blood-pressures between non-smokers and both smokers and ex-smokers. In fire-brigade drivers the daily cigarettes smoking negatively correlated with diastolic blood-pressure. However, negative linear correlation between smoking and body mass index was found. It means that smokers were thinner, and thinner subjects had lower blood pressure. Besides the mentioned, in the workers of professional fire-brigade and the separate group of firemen, the body mass index and body fat percent correlated with systolic and diastolic blood pressures. In fire-brigade drivers with systolic blood-pressures their age correlated with systolic blood pressure and with diastolic blood pressure their age, specific length of service and the body mass index correlated. In the others with systolic and diastolic blood pressures the body mass index correlated with plasma glucose concetrations.

Summary: The results of this investigation points to the constant increase of number of smokers, consumers of alcoholic drinks and abuse of other dependence drugs in the pupils of secondary schools preparing health care workers. Comparing the date from 1988 and 1990. we can see that the incidence of smokers has increased (that increase is statistically singificant, p<0.05) both among males and females. 16.2% of malec and 8% of females smoked in 1988, and that number increased to 24.6% males and 15.7% females in 1990. Further dat about the disposition of smoking according to the age in both sexes show that smokers are getting younger and younger when thay start that habit. There is also an increase in the habit of drinking black coffee, more frequent among females than among males. An increase can be seen in drinking alcoholic beverages in both sexes from 1988 to 1990.. The reason given to explain drinking alcohol the habit of drinking with meals, for fun, to create a better mood. There is a considerable increase in taking narcotic drugs in both sexes. We are of the opinion that school programs should cantain more contents on dependence diseases and that a better program of primary prevention for this age group particularly for future thalth care workers should be organized.

Summary: An epidemiological investigation was carried out among the pupils of all secondary schools for nurses and laboratory technicians in Croatia in 1988. 7.232 pupils were polled. The incidence of smoking is equally present in both sexes: 15.3% males smoke regularly and 14.7% occasinally, while there are 12,4% regular and 16.6% occasional smokers among females. Alcoholic drinks are taken mostly with males (14,7%) for recreation (13.5%) and for a better mood (11.7%). Males get drunk more often then females: 31.3% males and 10.5% females were drunk several times a year, and 5.5% of males and only 0.9% of females were drunk several times a month. They drink mostly beer, than liqueur and wine. Strong drinks are not often consumed. A high percentage of examinees answer that they would not take drugs (94.3%). Among those who would take them, there are males (7.1%) then females (3.8%). 13.1% males and 8.4% females would like to take hashish or marijuana. This epidemiologica investigation of the incidence of the use of dependence drugs (tobacco, alcohol and drugs) popint out the necessity of organizing prevention among the youth, particularly in schools preparing future health care workers.

    Held: from 06/01/95 to 06/03/95
Summary: The aim of the investigation carried out among students of the student's colony "Ivan Goran Kovačić" in Rijeka has been to establich th incidence and some characteristics of smoking, alcohol drinking and use of other dependence drugs in the student's population. Those date can serve as the basis for prevention and fight against the increase of dependence in the young. The results were obtained by polling 363 students (189 males and 174 females) by means of a specially prepared questionnaire. The students smoke tobacco in 55.4% cases: 59.8% males and 50.6% females. About 60% of smokers consume more then 20 cigarettes dialy. It has been interesting to establich that in 39.9% of their families there are no smokers, father smokes in 21.2%, brother in 8.5%, sister in 3.9% and mother in 3.3% of cases. The reasons given for smoking are various, but the majority (20.1%) state they smoke for relaxation, while 11% have answered tat they don't know the reason. The use of alcoholic drinks has become a frequent form of behavior among the young in various occasions. So 22.3% state that they drink alcohol nearly every day or several times a week, 29.5% take alcoholic drinkg several times monthly, 30.8% several times yearly, while 17.4% have answered that they never take alcohol. It can be noticed that drinking black coffee has become a frequent habit (71.7%) while 28.9% emphasize that they never drink it. The non critical attitude toward the use of drugs gives rise to worry, because 22% of the examinees state they wolud take some drugs if they had the chance. However, only 2.5% occasionally make use of narcotics. 9.4% of students have tried sniffing glue, while 89.5% answer they have never drink it.

Summary: An epidmeiogica investigation on the incidenc eof smoking tobbaco, drinking alcoholic beverages andusing dependence drugs in a part of the students' population was carried out at the Pedagogical Faculty in Rijeka. There is an increase of smokers in boths exes: males 41.5% and females 41% a fact that points out that women have become equal with men and that the increase is more pronounced among women. 50% examined students drink black coffee regularly, this habit being more pronounced among female students (60%). Drinking alcohol becames more and more frequent among the young. 6.4% males and 0.3% females drink alcohol every day. The interest in drugs shows a considerable increase among the young in our contry. 12,4% males and 9.6% females express a desire for taking drugs. The percenrage of those who would like to take hashish or marijuana is very high: 08,8% of males and 8.28% of females. Although smoking and drinking are known as risk factors for creating a favourable ground for the use of the drugs, The students of he Pedagogical Faculty are noncritical toward that habit. Such negative attitudes and behaviour should necessarily be changed.

Summary: The concepts of disability, war invalidity, general and occupational working capacity and those of medical, vocational, social and economic rehabilitation are discussed. The directives for the rehabilitation of war invalids as put forward by the Rehabilitation Department of the Croatian Army Medical Staff Headquaters are presents. The procedures for evaluating residual working capacity and for providing for war invalids during their vocational rehabilitation are described. The work of the first degreee Commission for war disability evaluation in Rijeka is reviewed since March 1991. The Commission, which has two occupational health physicians from the Medical Centre Rijeka among its members, has been responsible for medical reports and expert opinions for 22 country districts. Date show that of the total number of disabled persons assessed more than half (53%) were under 31 years of age. In 6% of the disabled the established degree of disability did not entitle them to the status of the war invalid. The most frequent invalidity degree, 20%, was valid for 16% of the persons. Only 8% of the invalids were granted permanent disability. The validity of most disability assessment certificates (61%) was for a period of one year. The greatest number of the totally disabled were under the age of 26. Most injuries were those of lower and upper limbs, mainly explosive and gunshot wounds, often accompanied by bone fractures.

Summary: In this paper the authors elaborate in detail the problems of the influence of modern sea traffic technology on the appearance of neuroses, referring to the absenteeism features of dockers, in the period from 1981 to 1985. Seamen were significantly more absent than the workers of the control group. Five-year absenteeism rate for seamen (0.23%) was significantly higher rate that the same rate in the workers of the control group (0.16%). The frequency of absences due to neurosis was triply lower in seamen thaan in the control group (8.3%:2.9%). The average duration of an absence was four times higher than in the control group (29.5:7.1 days). The average age of absent seamen was lower than in the docker (32.4:35.4 year).
