Summary: Contemporary diagnostics of the stomatognathic system's
function require various diagnostic, therapeutic as well as control
procedures, which unavoidably connect the science of dentistry with
different interdisciplinary branches, i.e. biomedical instrumentation as
well as computer analysis of biosignals. This project is therefore
basically aimed at obtaining qualitative and quantitative data from the
field of kinetics of healthy individuals as well as pathologically altered
stomatognathic systems by the use of non-invasive and repeatable methods,
such as the method of surface electromyography (EMG) of masticatory
muscles, investigation of the latency and duration of the silent period,
test of isometric load response, registration of occlusal sound by the
gnathosonic method and real-time analysis in reference to EMG recordings.
These recordings are obtained on a specially designed PC-based system for
the registration and analysis of electromyographic signals and sounds from
occlusal contacts. Six channels are used for the registrations of EMG
signals and two channels are for sound registrations. This system was
created as the result of a long- term experimental study and collaboration
between the School of Dentistry and Faculty of Electrical Engineering in
Zagreb of the University of Zagreb, and further experimental work is
directed towards new possibilities of the systems upgrade, such as new
possibilities for the measuring of bite-force according to masticatory
units or segments. The early experimental phase of the PROJECT deals with
the measurements and assignments of anthropometrical marks and esthetic
components by the use of 3-D image analysis and computer or video-
processing, mostly due to the deficiency of necessary equipment. This
section is therefore mostly theoretically elaborated and prepared for
future realization.
Keywords: Gnatho-kinetic, electromyography (EMG), masticatory muscles, silent period, gnathosonics, gnathodinamometrics, diagnostic of disfunction, early reveal of disfunctions, PC-analysis of the registrations, 3-D analysis of the face, computer dental graphics
Research goals: The necessity for the use of the different
diagnostic as well as therapeutic and control check-up procedures
inevitable connects the science of dentistry with the other
interdisciplinary areas, as certain knowledge or the results obtained in
experimental work from other scientific branches could find their usage
here. The aim of this project is to upgrade available methods by relating
the problems in the field of dentistry with methods from other scientific
fields such as biomedical electronics, computer analysis of biosignals and
medical informatics concerning the fields of analysis preparation and
results evaluation. The investigation is designed as three main topics that
are going to be simultaneously realized: * Section I deals with the
examination of the stomatognathic system's normal activity in subjects with
natural teeth and in complete or partial denture wearers, through methods
of quantitative kinesyological investigations. * Section II is composed
of the examination of dysfunctional symptoms, as well as TMJ and myofacial
pain syndrome comprising the examination through various therapeutic
procedures. * Section III is directed to the investigation of the
anthropometrical and cephalometrical parameters by using photographic and
video-records and their digitalization and processing by a computer system
and other necessary peripheral equipment.
