Summary: In this part of book the author shows the best and the less of fix-orthodontic treatment. The best of this treatment is that in the activ part of therepy we get sooner results and less in estetic nature. That is the reason why we today use plastic brackets and supplement elements which we fix directly on teeth with "bonding sistem".

Summary: Frequency of taurodontism in 47,XXY males was investigated in a sample of 24 patients. Mandibular molar forms were determined on the basis of a clinical survey and the analysis of the orthopantomograms. A method to diagnose taurodontism was based on the index established by Jorgenson and all 1982. Taurodont molars were found in 9 out of 38 lower molars of 24 males with 47,XXY. The frequency of taurodontism in 47,XXY was extremely high (25%). Phenotypic influences of the extra X-chromosome may be caused by specific genes on the sex chromosomes or alternatively by non-specific effects of heterochromatin.

Summary: Palatal groove (PG) is rare morphological defect of upper incisors, frequently associated with localised destruction of periodontal tissue with endodontic complications. In this study, a sample of 1.081 male young subjects, aged 20 to 22, palatal groovin was recorded in 11 (1.01%) subjects, affecting 15 incisors. Among 634 adult subjects, aged 35-50 , with periodontal disease, PG was found in 5 (0.79%) incisors. Second incisors were more frequently (75%) associated with this anomaly. In the young adults, the mean probing pocket depth in the groove region and around other teeth of the intercanine area was 3.8 and 1.2mm. In the group of periodontal patients the probing pocket depth was significantly greater at the site of PG (8.8mm vs. 4.0mm).

    Language: engleski
Summary: The objective of this study was to check if some lateral cephalometry methods could be used for determining the occlusal plane inclination in edentulous patients. For that reason 60 lateral skull radiograms from male subjects with no history of orthodontic treatment, with Angle class I occlusion and 28-32 teeth in the jaws were chosen for the measurement. The length of the ANS-HN, ANS-PNS, HN-IP and N-S plane was measured, as well as the angle between the above mentioned planes and the occlusal plane. Descriptive statistics and correlation analysis was carried out. According to our results, Sloane's and Cook's theory and Rich's theory have to be rejected. Also, the length of the maxillary or the cranial base has no strong correlation with the angle between these planes and the occlusal plane. So, the length of ANS-HN, IP-HN, ANS-PNS and N-S cannot be used to predict the occlusal plane inclination. It seems that other methods, rather than the methods evaluated evaluated in this study should be prefered to establish the occlusal plane in edentulous patients.

Summary: The degree of convexity of vestibular and oral tooth planes enables the shape equence from the tooth crown to the epithelial attachment of the gingiva by forming the slightest possible risk region of tooth plaque deposit. At the same time, the proper form of the crown adds to an even distribution of load of all underlying structures, namely of periodonts and the highly sensitive alveolar bone. The authors, however, consider this research only as a preliminary one and they intend to go on investigating using more advanced measuring methods and equipment.

Summary: The earliest data on spectacles in Croatia originate from the 14th century. Inventories of personal belongings and valuables of distinguished individuals testify about the existence of spectacles from the 14th century onward. Pictorial representations of spectacles and spectacle cases are found in Croatia in various forms as watermark in a 14th century paper, on a silver altar-piece from 1477, on paintings, frescoes and wood-cuts from the 15th century onward. A pair of 16th century spectacles are kept in Split (Poljud) and a selection of 18th to 20th century spectacles are on display in various museums in Croatia. In 17th century literature the effects of lenses on ametropia is discussed and Latin and Croatian terms for spectacles and opticians are mentioned.

Summary: Clinical and electronystagmographic findings of 40 patients with congenital ocular nystagmus, most of them free of strabismus and with only a horizontal zone of blockade were colected during a 25 year period, i.e. from 1967. to 1992. Most patients were operated on according to Anderson (N=20), subsequently modified according to Kestenbaum (N=8), where as in 6 patients Kestenbaum's procedure with a strongly expressed compensation position was performed. Results of the surgical treatment were assessed by accurate electronystagmographic analysis. A shift of the neutral zone into a forward or more forward position and a decrease in the intensity of nystagmus in all directions were recorded in all the patients.

Summary: This study evaluates the periodontal status of adult Croatian males with Klinefelter syndrome in order to provide further information on the effects of the sex chromosome imbalance of the periodontal shape and condition. The measurements were taken on forty-two 47,XXY males and two control groups of 60 males and 80 females. An apparent difference between the groups is evident, the prevalence of the affected teeth in the study group was 50%. The percentage of bone resorption in the control group was less than in the males with an extra X chromosome (males 13.33%; females 11.25%),(p <0.01). The most frequently involved teeth in 47,XXY males were the upper and lower incisors and the lower premolars.

Summary: The shape and size of the craniofacial complex in 35 adult 47,XXY Klinefelter syndrome individuals were cephalometrically analysed and compared with 60 control males. Twenty-four angular and 18 linear measurements were obtained on each subject. The results showed that the 47,XXY males were different from the controls in several areas of the craniofacial skeleton. Most of the differences were located in the cranial base and the cranial base angle. Very early change in craniofacial morphology of the 47,XXY males evidently cannot be compensated for by many environmental factors influencing the growth and development of the head.

Summary: Width and shape of the hard palate were determined from hard stone casts of 47,XXY males /26/ (Klinefelter Syndrome -KS) and population control males /80/ as sugested Korkhaus and Poje. The results shows many differences in 47,XXY males, than in the normal morphology and size of hard palate in controls. The difference in width and shape of hard palate in 47,XXY males is attributed to the differences in the growth of the maxillae as a part of craniofacial complex. These findings indicate that genes situated on X chromosome or heterocromatin may have a role effect on the growth and development of craniofacial complex.

Summary: In 30 subjects with normal occlusion, Angle class 1, a latency and duration of silent period (SP) were measured on the electromyograms of both masseter and temporal muscles, before and after the placement of the artificial occlusal interferences (aci). The duration of the SP was significantly longer after the placement of (aci) , and the various types were recognized as doubled and tripled SP. The results suggested that this method could be used for evaluation of the stability of occlusion and for the recognition of the occlusal interferences.

Summary: Inhibitory reflexes in complete denture wearers were not investigated as much as in normal individuals or patients suffering from TMJ disorders. The aim of this study was to investigate inhibitory reflexes in complete denture wearers. 10 EMG measurements were made for each of 20 complete denture wearers and 60 controls with natural teeth. Statistical analysis revealed significantlly longer latencies (p<0,01) and duration (p<0,01) of silent period (SP), and also various qualitative characteristics - like doubled or tripled SP or periods of depressed muscle activity.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the method according to which the distance from the incisor papilla (IP) to the foveolae palatinae (FP) divided by a factor 4 is equal to the length of the frontal upper incisors. The length of 115 natural and 105 artificial teeth was measured, as was the distance between IP and FP. These distances were divided to calculate the relevant factor. The presumption was confirmed as the relevant factor for natural teeth is 4.44 and for the artificial teeth 4.43 in our population.

Summary: The aim of the study was to investigate the smoking-induced changes in hard and soft tissues of the oral cavity. The study included 50 long-term cigarette smokers of both sexes and 100 age matched non smokers as controls. Nine parameters relevant for the evaluation of dentition and oral cavity mucosa were assessed. Results showed the changes in hard and soft tissues to be significantly more frequently found in smokers than in non-smokers. Poor hygiene as an additional factor, subsequent reduction of pH and frequentxerostomia, make an exellent basis for the development of dental caries.

Summary: From the literature there is a lot of evidence about the influence of an extra X-chromosome on the craniofacial morphology. The aim of this study was to investigate if an extra X-chromosome in XXY chromosomal costitution makes an influence on the position of an occlusal plane (OLs). Measurements were made on 35 lateral radiographs of 47 XXY males and 60 lateral radiographs of control males, according to Solow. Significant differences were recorded for the angles between the following lines: Cranial base (NSL), OLs (XI=12.25ř-+3.92; X2=15.63ř-+4.37;P<0.01), Frankfort horizontal plane (FH):OLs (XI=9.531ř-+3.382; X2=11.53ř+-3.38, P<0.01). The difference in occlusal plane position in XXY males is attributed to the differences in the growth of the maxilla and mandible, which is so large that environmental factors are not able to compensate for it.
