Summary: During 1991. we collected musculature from 50 fattening
pigs originated from a larger farm. Histopathological examination of all
150 samples revealed dystrophic changes of various degree, but changes on
blood vessels as well. According to those findings, in 1992 we took
samples from another 50 fattening pigs. In muscles we diagnosed systemic
myopathy, and in blood vessels chronic changes with thickening and
hyperplasia of endothelium, fibroelastic proliferation and mononuclear
cells infiltration. During 1992. we also collected musculature form lambs
from a larger farm and individual breeders. In numerous muscles examined
we diagnosed tipical Zenker's dystrophy, dystrophic calcification of
gluteal muscles and Zenker's dystrophy of myocardium. Since the mortality
rate in those lambs was high, we reccomended prophylactic application of
Muvisel, Pliva, with good results. At the end of 1992 we took musculature
from 50 fattening pigs, poorly fed on individual households of western
Herzegovina. In that area pigs are poorly feed (some slops, brans and
pasture) untill before slaughtering and they get some corn in October and
November. Histopathological examination revealed nutritional deficiency,
and since the summer 1993 was hot and dry, there was a lackage of pasture
and mortality rate for fattening pigs was higher. We diagnosed systemic
myopathy, although clinical veterinary diagnose was intoxication or
bronchopneumonia. For the purposes of checking our postulation, at the end
of 1993 we took samples of musculature from 50 fattening pigs from the
same area. In 1993 we analysed sudden death of a large number of piglets
in one farm. We found dystrophic changes in musculature and
histopathology revealed infarcts in myocardium. We established E-vitamine
deficiency and rough treatment (stress) at the time of weaning (i. e. at
the time when mortality was high) as the cause of death. During the whole
period we took the musculature and myocardium from fattening calves and
bullocks. Our findings are going to be summarized in Master's thesis named
"Pathological changes in myocardium of fattening calves". Biochemical
serum analysis done on fattening bullocks revealed higher levels of NO2,
and we plan to investigate those findings further. In 1994. special
attention was pointed to the systemic myopathy of the young suckling goats
and congenital goiter of the same animals. Both diseases increases in
frequency especially in areas i which until now they did not beeen
detected.
Research goals: The goal is revealing the ethiology and define
ethiological factors of systemic myopathys, through histopathological
examinations of skeletal muscles and myocardium of animals from various
districts, with various clinical status and zoohygienic treatment. Through
the correction of mentioned ethiological factors we want to enable the
production of animal products of high standards. That way we help
maintaining the health of population and minimalize mortality rate in farm
animals as well as those held on individual hauseholds.
