Summary: Total of 833 bacteria strains isolated from pigs on the
territoryof Croatia were investigated for susceptibility to
differentantibiotics.Between 14 antimicrobical substances,all
testedisolates showed the lowest degree of susceptibility to
neomycin(3,60%),followed by cefalexin
(9,24%),lincomycin/spectinomycin(15,0%), furazolidone (17,88%) and the
combination of amoxycillinand clavulanic acid (10,20%).Manifold resistance
to 14antimicrobical substances at the same time was found in 129different
variations.The greatest number of variations,78 intotal,wsa found in E.coli
strains, which accounts for 60,46% ofall found variations. The highest
incidence of common variationsbeing found between the strains of E.coli and
salmonellae,A.pleuropneumoniae and P.multocida.Significant increase
inresistance of bacteria,it is indispensable to perform acontinuous
laboratory control in order to achieve a succesfullcontrol of bacterial
infectious in pigs with systemic use ofadequate antimicrobial agents.

Summary: ELISA test was used for the first time in Croatia
forinvestigation of extent and level of serum antibodies in pigsafter
natural infection with Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae.Serologicaltests were
carried out from day 7 of life till the end offattening period and in
breeding animals till the age of 15months,i.e.second farrowing. From the
epidemiological point is ofgreat importance that ELISA test enables
accurate detection ofsero-positive animals at the age of 4-8 months when
the breedingperiod starts(maiden gilts). All tested herds were
serologicallypositive and 43.33% of positive animals had an average
antibodylevel of 104.92%.Differences in the intensity of infectionbetween
the herds were recorded. In some herds 20-80% of positiveanimals had an
antibody level ranging from 42.25% to 190.05%.

Summary: The effect of immunoprophylaxis on the reduction of
incidence ofmycoplasmal pneumonia in swine has been investigated for
thefirst time on the territory of Croatia.Increased level ofantibodies
determinated by ELISA test was found in the progeny ofvaccinated sows
during the first weeks of life in distinction topiglets of unvaccinated
sows which were sero-negative.Increasedlevel of serum antibodies was found
in a group of 265 pigletsvaccinated of two occasions. Results of clinical
trials showed a80% reduction of total pneumonia-induced losses(due
todeaths,emergency slaughtering and exclusion)compared with
controlanimals.Macroscopic examination of the lung lesions at
slaughtershowed reduction of mycoplasmal pneumonia by 68.55% in
vaccinatedpiglets, including the percenrage of piglets with
pulmonarychanges, affected lung lobes and the average score of
pulmonarychanges.

Summary: The paper presents the results of antibody level for
thebacterium A.pleuropneumoniae which have been found in the bloodserum of
4418 pigs from 17 herds during the first 6 months of1993. Serum antibody
levels were determined by microagglutinationin mercapto-ethanol (2-ME-TA
test) and the results were readspectrophotometrically in optical density
(OD) values at 405 nm.On the average, in all herds and in all categories of
pigs thepercentage of positive animals amounted to 24.85%. Analysis of
17herds of pigs revealed that serovar 2 was present in 52.94% ofherds,
serovar 4 in 11.76% and serovar 2 and 4 simultaneously in35.29% of herds.
It is obvious that serovar 2 predominated in88.23% of herds.

Summary: The Baypamun treated gilts had significantly higher serum
levels of total proteins (TP) and immunoglobulins (Igs) than non-treated
gilts. The serum levels of Igs and TP in pigs born to gilts injected with
Baypamun were significantly higher at 7 and 14 days after
farrowing, respectively, than those in both control groups. Pigs born to
Baypamun-treated gilts survived much better(8.6/9.5 or 90.5% weaned pigs
per litter) than the offspring from the control sows (7.9/9.9 or 79.8%)
during the preweaning period.

Summary: A sudden death of about 60 pigs at time of weaning is
described. A whole series of factors are discused which may have
contributed to the nutritive deficiency of vitamin E and selenium in pigs.
Of course, a considerable role in the death of pigs had moudly and
hydrolitico - oxidative adulterated food, but the decisive stress factor in
pigs was the increased physical effort during their being cauhgt in the
box and thrown in the crammed cart and transported. The pathohistologic
analysis of the miocardium showed the hyaline - waxy degeneration and the
infarct approaching syndrome of the heart musculature. This finding
incotrovertibly shows that the cause of the sudden death of pigs was the
heart failure due to dietetic myiocardiopathy.

Summary: Examining the pigs' blood serum, the increased
concentration of tolta bilirubin during the first control was found in 6%
of the animals, in 12% during the second control, and in 30% in the third
control, the differences observed being statisticaly significant (P<0.001).
The concentration of total proteins were within the phisiological limits
during all three controls. The patohistological analysis of the animals'
liver revealed acute changes of medium and higher intensity, but the
dominant changes were those of higher intensity in the form interstitial
hepatitis, disseminated miliary hepatitis, blood vessel sclerosis,
bile-duct hyperplasia, and lobulus atrophy. On the basis of the result
obtained, it is concluded that also chronic liver changes could produce the
increased concentration of the total bilirubin in the blood serum.

Summary: The study was carried out in 50 male and female pigs whose
blood was taken by the punction of the vena cava cranialic on the 30th,
135th and 217th days of the life. The AST, ALT and GGT activity was
determined in the blood serum, and during slaughter the liver samples were
taken for the pathohistological analysis. The pathohistological examination
showed acute changes of medium and higher intensity. Chronic changes of
higher intensity were dominant in the sense of interstitial hepatitis,
disseminated miliary hepatitis, blood vessel sclerosis, gall duct
dysplasia, and lobulus atrophy. On the basis of the result obtained, it can
be concluded that the increased AST activity suggest acute liver damage,
while the increased ALT activity speaks for chronic liver changes. Among
the listed biochemical parameters, the hightest diagnostic signifikance
proved to have GGT whose increased activity speaks for chronic liver
changes brough about by the action of toxic matter in the foodstuffs.

Summary: These programs comprised aimed administration of
chemopharmaceuticals in the treatment of specific diseases and were based
on systemic study of bacterial sensitivity. Dinstict differences in
sensitivity required specific administration program every animal brees,
even for each animal category of the same breed. The disease control
programs offered the measures for a short term administration of
chemopharmaceuticals efficient at tehnologically critical production stages
(given in feed / drinking water): for sows before and after farrowing from
day 7 to 21, for piglets 7-10 days after weaning and then 7-10 days at the
onset of pre-fattening and the onset of fattening peroid, and for yearlings
and boars before breeding. The programs included all chemopharmaceutical
agents manufactured worldwide for pig breeding industry. After 15 years of
their implementation the incidence of conditional bacterial diseases in
pigs has been reduced to a worldwide level, despite ever-lasting
difficulties arising from big aglomerations of animals.

animals over the period 1980-1992 and 24.488 human isolates from patients
over the period 1983-1992 was tested by the agar diffusion method. The
highest incidence of resistance to TMP+SF was recorded among animal
isolates of Escherichia coli (57.6%) and Staphylococci (53.4%) but
significant increase in resistance was noted in all bacteria of animal
origin that were examined. In general, strains of human origin were less
frequently resistant to TMP+SF but increasing resistance was also evident
among these isolates, with exception of Campylobacters.

Summary: The authors describe the use of the immunoassay (ELISA)
in determining atrazine residues in samples of drinking water from the
swine - breeding farm "Dubravica" close to the city Zagreb (the
agricultural zone). In all water samples residues of atrazine were detected
and the hightest atrazine concentration were recorded during September,
after a rain period (1.055- 1.758 microgram/L). The determination of
atrazine by the ELISA test is the simple, rapid and very sensitive (0.05
microgram/L), requiring small analytical portions (only 100 microL) without
any previous preparations).

Summary: Liver diseases, inaccessible to routine clinical
examination, are frequently encountered in intensive pig breeding. In this
work it was aimed, on the basis of pathohistological analyses of the liver,
to get an insight into the health status of pigs on a farm with a closed
production cycle. Most cases related to interstitial hepatitis: 62% of
higher and 36% of medium intensity. Hydropic and vacuolar degeneration was
found in 36% of higher and 54% of weaker intensity, blood vessel sclerosis
in 34% of higher and 18% of medium intensity, hyperplasia of bile ducts in
26% of higher and 42% of medium intensisy, and disseminated miliary
hepatitis in 10% of higher and 44% of medium intensity. In the highest
number of cases chronic changes prevailed, which speaks for liver changes
brought about, as all the circumstances suggest, under the influence of
mycotoxins and various chemicals employed in agriculture.

Summary: Intestinal pathomorphological changes in suckling
piglets experimentally infected with virus of transmissible gastroenteritis
(TGE) were studied pathoanatomically, histopathologically and by scanning
electron microscopy at several steps of lesion development. Obtained
results of evaluated pathomorphological changes were compared and a
comprehensive picture of time related lesion development was created.
The study proved the
efficiency of giving the own vaccine against TGE to pregnant sows. Also the
sequential morphological steps of development and healing of the TGE young
piglets were thoroughly studied in it.

Summary: Both, non-ETEC strains 1466 and 2407 containing wildtipe
orrecombinant plasmid, respectively, that encode expression of F4fimbrial
antigen induced a mild to moderate mononuclear /polimorphonuclear leukocyte
(MNL / PMNL) infiltration in jejunallamina propria of orally infected
weaned pigs. Also, they neithercaused destruction of villous epithelium nor
swelling of thesmall intestinal mucosa. The use of F4+ ETEC strain M1823
wasassociated with marked lesions of jejunal / ileal villi, increased
infiltration of MNL / PMNL and hyperplasia of Peyer'spatches. Nonadherent
and non-toxigenic E.coli strain 1467 did notcause mucosal damage of
inflammatory response in the smallintestine of inoculated pigs. The results
indicated thatgenetically - engineered F4+ LT- STa- STb- E.coli strain 2407
wasable to invoke the local (mucosal) infiltration ofimmunocompetent cells
without inducing histologic alterations injejunal / ileal villous
epithelium and, thus, seems to be thebest candidate for development of a
