Summary: By a commercial preparation of the immunoenzyme test
LaCarte Test and thin-layer chromatography the presence of zearalenone was
examined in 50 maize samples collected in three localities in Croatia.A
mycologic analysis has shown that in the samples examined there were
present moulds of the genera Mucor,Rhizopus,Alternaria,Aspergillus and
Penicillium, while in 13 samples there were moulds of the genus
Fusarium. The finding of the mycotoxin did not agree with the observed kind
of mould or the degree of the sample contamination. The presence of the
zearalenone was established in a total of 10 samples (20%) out of the 50
examined ones.

Summary: The authors describe the use of the immunoassay (ELISA) in
determining atrazine residues in samples of drinking water from the
pig-breeding farm close to the city Zagreb. In all water samples residues of
atrazine were detected and the highest atrazine concentrations were
recorded during September,after a rain period (1,75 ug/L).The determination
of atrazine by the ELISA test is simple, rapid and very sensitive (0.05
ug/L),requiring small analytical portions (only 100 uL) without any
previous preparations.

Summary: By the means of immunoenzymic test (ELISA) 40 samples of
gilt sera have been investigated on the presence of zearalenone. The samples
originated from four pig-breeding farms in the Republic of Croatia, having
reproductive disturbances in the production, particularly in gilts. The
mycotoxin was established in 30% of gilts, but in exceptionally low
concentration not able to cause clinical picture of
intoxication.Nevertheless, the presence of zearalenone in such low
concentrations in sera samples in not necessarily only the consequence of
low quantities of mycotoxin in gilt feed, but its fast degradation in an
organism. It is also possible that zearalenone even in such low
concentration causes disturbances of reproduction in gilts,if being taken
in feed for a longer period of time.

Summary: s-Triazine (atrazine) residues in pig drinking water on
pig-breeding farm were monitored during a one-year period using the methods
of immunochemistry (ELISA) and high-pressure liquid chromatography
(HPLC).Results of analytic determination showed 98 % of the samples of pig
drinking water to contain atrazine
(2-chloro-4-ethylamino-6-isopropylamino-s-triazine).In spring,the
concentration of atrazine (2.87 ug/L) was considerably above the maximal
level(0.1 ug/L) allowed by the Regulation on Drinking Water(Official
Gazette of the Republic of Croatia,No. 46,June 1994).These samples of pig
drinking water were evaluated as inappropriate according to health
standards, implying a risk for both animal and human health.

Summary: s-Triazine compounds,atrazine
(2-chloro-4-ethylamino-6-isopropylamino-s-triazine) and prometryne
(2-methylthio-4,6-bis-isopropyl-s-triazine) are used as selective
herbicides in agriculture, leading to their presence in raw and industrial
food products. On entering the bloodstream, the pesticide can reach organs
and tissues involved in the reproductive system and cross the blood-brain
barrier, posing various risks to the reproductive processes. It is accepted
that testosterone must converted into 5 alpha-reduced metabolites in target
structure such as prostate, pituitary or hypothalamus,to become fully
active. The influence of atrazine and prometryne on the enzymic system in
the pig pituitary were studied.Testosterone is coverted in the pig
pituitary into its metabolites 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone (5 alpha-DHT),5
alpha-androstan-3 beta,17 beta-diol (3 beta-diol) and androstenedione under
the influence of alpha-reductase (5alpha-R),3 beta and 17 beta
hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases (3 beta and 17 beta -HSD).w addition of 0.7
umol atrazine or prometryne did not change the amount of 5 alpha-DHT
formation vs.control,but the formation of 3 beta,17 beta-diol and
androstenedione were significantly (P<0.01) stimulated under the influence
of atrazine vs.control values.Addition of 0.7 umol prometryne did not
affect the tested enzyme activities, but the addition of atrazine and
prometryne in the mixture in equimolar concentration (0.35 + 0.35 umol)
significantly reduced 3 beta,17 beta-HSD activi

Summary: The results of investigation show no significant
differences insensitivity between TLC and immuunoenzyme assay procedure is
easyto perform and relatively cheaper. Considering these advantagesand high
congruity of results, these screening procedures can berecommandede to
serve as a quick and simple indicator ofzearalenon intoxication of domestic
animals i suspected, theimmunoennzyme assay procedure should be
supplemented bychromatographic methods.
