Summary: From 1992. till end of 1995 we carried out laboratory tests
of 5145 collective (farm) milk samples. An increased somatic cell count
was recorded in 956(18,6%) households. The count was divided in five
categories: 250.000-1,000.000 cells per 1 ml milk, with the daily loss
(reduced milk pick up) of 916 liters, or 0,6 liters per cow an average.
According to the indicators, more marked decrease in milk production was
in the category 250.000-500.000 somatic cells per 1 ml sample. Daily
losses in that category were 0,4 liters of milk per animal and had a
further falling the trend due to increase in somatic cell count. Doubled
somatic cell count produced a drop in milk yield by 0,7 liters per cow and
even more. Daily, monthly and yearly milk pick up reductions expressed in
cash give more accurate picture of economic losses attributed to mastitis.
Research goals: Found the correlation between the volume of produced
milk, somatic cell count and losses in milk production. Other information about the project.
