Summary: The effects of 33% watery solution of Aldesol ( 5g
benzalchoniumchloride, 6g glutaraldehyde and 8g gloxal in 100g of solution
), the tincture of Hibisept ( 0,5g of chlorexidine gluconate in 70% ethanol
per 100ml of tincture ) and the 0,02% and 0,04% watery solutions of
Izosan-G ( sodium dichloroizocyanurate-dihydrate ) on the viability of the
sporulated oocysts of Toxoplasma gondii were studied. The oocysts were kept
at room temperature in Aldesol for 2 hours and in Hibisept and Izosan-G for
1, 2, 4 and 24 hours. After 4 washings in sterile saline the treated
oocysts, parallely with the saline treated controls, were bioassayed on
mice. Post-mortem examination of the mice showed tissue cysts of T.gondii
in all groups of mice whether injected with the treated or the control
oocysts. Thus, the three tested disinfectants applied in concentrations
generally recommended for killing various germs, failed to inactivate all
sporulated oocysts of T.gondii.
