Summary: Studies on prevalence of systemic myopathies in pigs
originated from a farm in 1992 were made up of taking the samples of m.
gracilis, m. longissimus dorsi and m. semispinalis capitis from 50 healthy
pigs at the abbatoir, before slaughtering. In all mentioned cases
histopathological changes on blood vessels, predominantly fibrinoid
degeneration with proliferation of macrophages in the walls and around
numerous blood vessels were revealed. Bigger blood vessels had constricted
lumen with fibroelastic thickening of the wall and infiltration of
macrophages. In some blood vessels almost complete occlusion of lumen was
found. In our investigation we decided that histopathological findings in
the heart (myocard) and coronary arteries should be included in the study,
and that is the working title of the project of one year duration. During
1993. we investigated changes in myocard of piglets after weaning, where,
during manipulation sudden death of more than 60 piglets occured. Those
piglets were from intensive production, from one farm. For the purposes of
establishing the diagnose, gross examination of piglets was performed, and
samples of organs (liver, spleen, small intestine) were taken for
microbiological, and samples of heart musculature for histopathological
examination. In those piglets histopathological examination revealed
hyaline-waxy degeneration with focuses of myolysis, homogenisation,
fragmentation i.e. discoidal destruction, with perimisium activation and
intercelullar oedema, with infarction, but without distinguished changes in
the walls of blood vessels, although there was visable extravasation. We
emphasise that piglets were about 28 days old. At the end of 1993. we took
samples of heart musculature of 50 fattening pigs originated from
individual breeders, and those investigations are in progress. Our
pathohistological study clearly shows that the cause of the sudden deaths
were the heart failure due to diaetetic microanghiopathy with Vitamin E and
selen deficiency, with coronary vessels lesions. Pathohistological analysis
of the myocardium showed hyaline and waxy degeneration.

Research goals: The goal of investigations is screening of mentioned
pathology in intensive production of pigs with histopathological and
histochemical examinations of blood vessels of heart, liver and lungs.
Observations will establish the frequency of this pathology in pig's
population, and will give us the view in the structure of losses due to
insufficient circulation, whereas qualitative investigations will enable us
to see the structure of histopathological changes and that would be the
basis for better understanding the ethiology and pathogenesis of mentioned
pathology. Our goal is to prevent losses in intensive production.
Scientific contribution is in using contemporary histological and
histochemical methods in the investigation, which will enable us to explain
the ethiology and pathogenesis of the heart failure and insufficiency of
circulation. Besides, pig has a comparative value as a model for the human
pathology.
