Summary: The exsperts of the Osijek Agricultural Institute have initiateda new barley breeding program which has been referred to whitlittle importance so far and small funds have been allocated,despite the fact that barley could play far more important rolein economy of the country than was before. During a short period,a relatively small barley breeder team made great efforts inbreeding this crop, thus creating varieties with a large yieldpotential (10 tIha) observed in large-scale production (Sladoran,Rodnik, Rex) for the purpose of the bier and malt industry inparticular, including the animal feed too, with little funds ofthe governmental bodies allocated. When used as animal feed,barley could partially replace maize fodder. Therefore, intensivework on breeding by creating new genotypes with a better qualityfor the bier industry and genotypes with a higher proteincontant, to be used in animal husbandry, respectively, shouldcontinue together with increasing the funds allocated. Theconsequences arising from the large-scale production will bemanifold in a positive manner. By hibridization and using themost suitable breeding methods on the basis of generecombination, it is possible to create new high-yieldingvarieties with genetic yield potential higher than 12 tIha, to beused in the production of high-quality malt on the one hand andin animal husbandry on the other due to the higher proteincontent.

Research goals: The objectives of the investigations are to create newhigh-yielding and high-quality winter and spring barley varietieswith their genetic yield potential of more than 12 t/ha (winterbarley) and more than 9 t/ha (spring barley), respectively. Inaddition to the above-mentioned primary objective, specialattention is drawn to barley breeding in terms of increasing theresistance to lodging, diseases and pests, and the tolerance tounfavourable environmental factors. Since barley is used for multiple purposes in practice, barleybreeding involves the following: a) to create high-yielding and high-quality winter and springbrewing varieties; b) to create high-yielding two-rowed winter barley varieties, the kernels of which are to be used as a) brewing barley of highquality and b) animal fodder, in dependance of the productionconditions and ameliorative measures applied; c) to create high-yielding six-rowed winter barley varieties withimproved nutritive values to be used for animal feeding.
