Summary: The program comprises identification of the fungi Erysiphe
graminis f.sp. tritici, Puccinia graminis f.sp. tritici and isolates of the
fungi Leptosphaeria nodorum and Fusarium graminearum, the causal agents of
powdery mildew, black stem rust, glume blotch and scab in wheat. The
obtained pathotypes and isolates are further investigated to determine
their formula of virlence, which determines the level of resistance of the
selected wheat genotypes of both domestic and foreign origin, as well as of
the material obtained from breeding program for resistance and level of
resistance of the improved sources of resistance. These sources of
resistance obtained from preliminary breeding program will serve for
further breeding aimed at developing high-yielding wheat varieties
resistant to the above causal agents.
Research goals: The aim of the investigation is to determine the
prevailing pathotypes of the fungi Erysiphe graminis f.sp. tritici and
Puccinia graminis f.sp. tritici using adequate testing. Based on the
identified pathotypes, their virulence or avirulence will be tested. This
investigation is also aimed at identifying isolates of the fungi
Leptosphaeria nodorum and Fusarium graminearum and determining the formula
for Leptosphaeria nodorum virulence. By testing genotypes of local and
foreign origin find sources of resistance, which, along with resistance to
the above diseases, also incorporate other favourable genetic and economic
traits suited to our wheat growing conditions. Through succesive crossing,
resistance level of the obtained sources of resistance to powdery mildew
and glume blotch in particular will be increased. The improved sources of
resistnace thus obtained in so called preliminary breeding will serve in
breeding for developing wheat varieties with desired resistance. The result
of the investigation would be stable and high wheat production with reduced
usage of fungicide in chemical control. This will not only reduce
production costs, but will also preserve the environment from pollution.
The end goal and success of the investigation is producton of ecologically
healthy food. What has been accomplished so far is identification of
pathotypes, determination of their virulence and resistance genes that
controle the prevailing pathotypes. By investigating the virulence of
individual isolates, inoculum for artificial infection was produced, which
serves for testing breeding material and world sources of resistance.
Consequently, selection of the best wheat genotypes for further breeding
work is thus enhanced.
