Summary: The investigations in the period from 1991 to 1995 are part
of more than 20 year long continued work of this project. In the last
five/year period, they were conducted in total 15 field experiments with
fertilization of seed-corn. In the seven trials corn responded to
presowing zinc application, while in four trials it was found response to
phosphorus and potassium fertilization. Corn did not responded on foliar
application of zinc. Also, in the second group of trials, they were tested
corn inbred lines under normal soil conditions and under soil stress
conditions-low level either phosphorus or potassium. Five corn inbred lines
and their 20 hybrids were grown on acid soil which contains high level of
plant available aluminium. They were found inbred lines and hybrids which
are something more tolerant to this soil stress. Twelwe corn inbred lines
and 14 hybrids were grown on gleysol (low K supply) on different levels of
potassium fertilization. In the above mentioned experiments they were
determined grain yields, while in some cases they were taken leaf samples
for chemical analysis. As our building including cabinets and
laboratories, are destoyed by war attacs, some chemical analysis were made
abroad. The results of these investigations were either published or in
preparing stage for publication in collaboration with foreign institutes.
Keywords: seed-corn, corn inbred lines, plant mineral nutrition, zinc, phosphorus, potassium, field trials, soil types.
Research goals: Croatia produces important amounts of corn seeds
for its and foreign market. Diversity of soil types and their chemical
properties (for example pH value, ion composition, plant available
nutrient contents etc) are reasons that some parcels are les favourable
for this assigment. The disorders of corn growth and development with the
appearance the symptoms of eiher phosphorus, potassium or zastern inc
deficiency, as well as toxicity of aluminum, appeared under Eastern
Croatian environmental conditions. Coldly and moistly spring is promoting
factor of appearance of these disorders, while under normal and dry
conditions they are either les expressed or secretly, but the grain yields
are relativelly lower. In general, it is the fact that the parents of corn
hybrids (these are usually inbred lines) are more susceptible to
environmental stress conditions compared to their progeny (hibrid corn).
For this reason, testing of tolerance degree of commercial and
experimental inbred lines with regard of different soil stress types has
both a practical and theoretical importance.
