Summary: Soybean breeding for yield and quality has been done in
acontinuos way at the Osijek Agricultural Institute for twentyyears now.
The results of soybean breeding are obvious from 21soybean cultivars
recognized, some of which have been grownwithin the largescale production.
A collection of a large numberof cultivars from F1 to F8 generation was
created byhybridization,giving 5000 to 8000 accessions a year.
Applyinggenetic conceptions in a large measure, as well as
breedingmethods, provided higher-yielding and top quality soybeancultivars
with larger resistance to principal diseases andlodging, all of them
belonging to the maturity groups 000 to II.These cultivars are used in
common sowing practices primarily, including them as the second crop, too.
The aim of soybeanbreeding is to improve domestic soybean production as
well as tomake it more stable.
Research goals: The objective of soybean breeding in the first place
is to createhigh-yielding (with genetic yield potential of over 6 t/ha)
andhigh-quality cultivars of the 000 to II maturity group. Thesecultivars
should be suitable for in-timeplanting, for plantingafter the optimum date
and as the second crop, all with highresistance to principal diseases and
lodging. To fulfil thisobjective it is necessary to work hard, i.e. to
study all thetraits and the way of their inheriting. These traits play
animportant role in achieving certain level of yield and quality.Secondly,
it is also necessary to collect and create new sourcesof genetic
variability, especially with genetic markers for acertain trait, such as
the source of resistance to certaindiseases or to race within the same
disease. Also, the primaryobjective is to create better commercial
cultivars, which meansat the same time our contribution expected. In other
words, byall these activities we tend to improve and increase
soybeanproduction using new high-yielding and high-quality cultivars.In
such a way, we shall make a contribution to the objectiveplaced.
Increasing the genetic yield potential will be achievedin future by new
sources of genetic variability and by laying alarger emphasis on other
yield and quality traits and yieldcomponents.
