Summary: The variety of sugar beet, with own physiological, botanical and morphological properties is one of the very important factors of sugar beet production. The variety with the high potential of productivity make possible that with the same material costs be produced more sugar per unit of area and so more profit. Because is necessary that the production of sugar beet is followed with the adequate investigations of breeding. The purpose of this project is selection types of the sugar beet which will have possibility that in a certain natural conditions give the higher yield of roots and sugar and ability of the better utilization of nutritions, in comparison with the other varieties of sugar beet. For reduction the costs of protection, new material must be more resistant to the main sugar beet diseases: Cercospora beticola Sacc., Peronospora schachtii Fuckel and rhizomania.

Research goals: The goal of project is to create new hybrids which will give the higher yield of sugar per unit of area in relation to the current hybrids in the next way: - increase the yield of roots for 5 - 10 %, - increase the content of sugar for about 0,5 %, - reduce the content of unsugar because of the better crystallization of sugar in processing of the sugar beet roots, - increase the resistance to diseases, - make more suitable shape of the root for mechanize harvesting, - increase the tolerance to bolting - the creation of seed branches in the first year of vegetation and - the differentiation of selection materials to length of vegetation.
