Summary: The homy and foreign selection houses made a lot of very qualityvarieties of sugar beet. On the basis of the performed researchof varieties and also the results of production, we can concludethat the current homy and foreign varieties are not significantdifferent in a view of the crystal sugar yield. The homyvarieties show the same, similar or better properties thanforeign varieties. The utilization of biological potential of avariety depends of the agricultural measures and environmentconditions. The varieties are reacting different on the changedconditions. Because is necessary that the expert services and theproducers of sugar beet take care constantly about the currentand new varieties. Expect of the variety potential, the greatimportance in the production of sugar beet have a quality ofseed. The field germination depends of a lot of factors. Theproducer of sugar beet in a moment of deciding about the sowingdensity knows only the laboratory germination and requires thatthe germination be the biger as is possible. The germinationdepends expect of the variety and processing also of theconditions of seeds multiplication and harvesting. That meansthat all participants in the producing of seeds are responsiblefor the quality of processing seeds.

Summary: In 1990 in Croatia sugar beet was grown on the area of 27.141 ha.The total of 1.205.060 t of the root was produced, which makesthe average yield of 44,4 t/ha. The anality of the root wasunsatisfactory. The average sugar content in the root was just15,97 %. The largest part of the area was sown in the second and in thethird decade of March in 94 % of the area, the seeding space in arow was 10 - 12 cm. The most often sown homy varieties are OsOptima, Os Nada, Os Sana and the foreign ones Sucrohil, Kawemajaand Kawelena. The nutrition of sugar beet was satisfactory, there was nitrogentoo much, wishing to increase the sugar beet yield. From 85 - 229kg N, 98-178 kg P2O5 and 140-405 kg K2O were used per hactare. Cercospora beticola appeared at middle of July at a low tillmiddle intensity rate of infection. Coustomary vermin were not present on the whole area, just insmaller groups. Chaetocnema tibialis appeared at 33 %, Bothynoders punctivertis34 % and Mamestra brassicae at 23 % of sown area of sugar beet. The harvesting of sugar beet root started at the middle ofSeptember and it was finished at the end of November.

Summary: In this study we showed the results of research the effect ofRadotiram fungicide (TMTD) on the laboratory and fieldgermination, chromosomal number, the yield of roots withthe hibrids of sugar beet. The experiment was performed underlaboratory and field conditions in 1989 and 1990 in Osijek. Inthe laboratory was established germination and chromosomal number(aceto-orcein squash method) of hibrids. By analysing theobtained results we established the effect of Radotiram onchromosomal number, field and laboratory germination of hybridscompared with control (without Radotiram). We also found aconsiderable negative effect of the larger doses of Radotiram onpercent of plants with 3n chromosomal number on the root yield ofsugar beet.

Summary: By the average of roots yield in the last 5 years, for theutilized built capacities of sugar factories, for the sowing ofsugar beet needs 34.233 hectares. Because of the occupation, warand unfavourable weather conditions in Autumn 1991, situation ina view of tillage and fertilization for the sowing of sugar beetin 1992 in the most number of cases is unsuitable to necessitiesof this crop. The part of unharvested sugar beet, theunstimulative price of roots for a long time, the high costs ofestablishing new production are factors which have the negativeinfluence on the sowing of sugar beet. Because exists the dangerof the significant reducing production areas or that theproducers decide for production to late, what is in a view ofapplication time of agricultural measures unsatisfy. The lateliberation of occupated areas will have the influence on thetillage, fertilization and sowing time. As late time of sowing ismaking the significant reduction of roots yield, the time ofsowing is limited. The sowing in May in the east part of Croatiawith a economic view is difficult justify. The absence ofnutrition up to Spring is possible to compensate with the greaterpresowing fertilization during the vegetation. However, with thetop dressing we may not to wait to long therefore the latefertilization can to have the negative influence on the rootsquality. Because of omissions in tillage, the protection of sugarbeet from weeds needs to forsee a full protection with the usingcombination of herbicides and several time application. Theprotection from vermins and diseases must be complete what canhelp that despite of all problems in the preparation ofproduction results be satisfy.

Summary: The sugar beet is a tipical alien fertilization plant with thebisexual flowers. For the producing of hybrid is necessary: - a cytoplasmic male-sterile diploid monogerm inbred line (2x,CMS, (S)xxzz), - a restorer of male sterility - O type (2x, (N)xxzz) and - a multigerm pollinator - diploid or tetraploid. Between the europian recognized varieties there are the majorityof triploid hybrids. Recently, very qualitative diploid hybridswith the more resistance to diseases were recognized. Theobtained results show that is possible to create the qualitativehybrids on the diploid and triploid level, and we can say that aproductive value of created hybrids depends more of theproductive characters and combining ability used lines. Fortested properties - the roots yield, the sugar content andcontent of K, Na, AmN - the obtained results show the significantdifferences between tested genotypes and the existance of somegenetic differences. Moreover, for all properties not existsregularity in the intensity of showing genotype variance. Dependon pollinator, his group of hybrids shown different intensity ofthe showing particular properties.

Summary: Sugar beet belongs to new agricultural plants. It became important in 1747 with Marggraf s finding that the sugar cane. The initial material of all the sugar beet cultivars created was a crossbreed of leaufy and root types of beet. Such bybrid population is characterized by low sugar content which was the reason why it was not interesting as a raw meaterial for sugar production. Since that time beet has undergone a series ofchanges, the biggest being those in the last 30-50 years. In this period multi-sorts have been replaced by monor polyploid sorts have been created and the hybrids on the sterile basis. Owing to these changes sugar beet has become an important industrial culture whose production is fully mechanized and yield and sugar content have increased by three or more times. In Croatia sugar beet improving started 70 years ago at "Belje". The work was intensified in 1962 by establishment of the Institute for Sugar Beet in Osijek. The results of work on this program have been applied in creating a considerable number of cultivars and in this paper the properties of two hybrids (Os Nada and Os Sana) will be analyzed whose value has been confirmed in extensive production.

Summary: Sugar beets are grown because of root that is used for sugar production. The yield of technological sugar is a result of root vield, sugar content and utilization of sugar. On the utilization of sugar, a significant effects have a conent of sodium, potassium and "harmful" nitrogen. By the individual analyses, we determine a content of sugar, sodium, potassium and "harmful" nitrogen of the individual sugar beet rots. The utilization of sugar beet is very practical property in the selection of roots, because it combines conent of sugar, sodium, potassium and "harmful" nitrogen. With the increasing of root mass up to 800 g, the content of sugar increases, and later decreases. Similar situation is with the utilization of sugar. The content of potassium, sodium and "harmful" nitrogen increases with the increasing of root mass. On the yield of technological sugar, the most influence has root mass. With the increasing of root mass, the yield of technological sugar is increasing also. The final selection is on the basis of the root shape. The regular and conical shape of root with the low head and the shallow longitudinal furrows is required. On the basis of results, the roots are divided in the three groups: the mother roots, the suprer-elite roots, the elite roots, and the worst roots are discorded.

Summary: Sugar beet has been sowed in Republic Croatia year by year started from 1990. about 29 000 hectares.Yields per hectar have been realized about 44 tons per hectar.Produced quantity of sugar beet varied between 1,0 - 1,4 million tons. After well known events in country, areas sowed with this field crop have been cut in two.Today, for sugar impotance demand, sugar beet has been sowed on unfitting grounds, sometimes with unfittin agricultural technology.Yields per hectar have been reduced under 40 tons per hectar. Till now, sugar beet price has been hardly tied with wheat price.Today this parity is more free. The government stimulates the sugar beet production by giving 18 DEM per one tons of fertilizer.Besides this, the government also gives premium of 13 DEM per tons of sugar beet. The sugar factories help producers with 7 DEM per tons of raw material. The total input of sugar beet production is worth about 3 500 DEM per one hectar. The incom of the same production know to be lower than the total input. For this reason some producers realise a loss through the production. This is specialy charcteristic for the years with bad weather conditions. Through the research it has been defined the typical model of analytic calculation based on standardization of raw material, human work and equipment.Acording to the standardization the difference between the total input and the income of sugar beet production has been fallen off.The research tells it is the best for the determination protective price in the future the government takes care of standardization of raw material, human work and other expensives.

Summary: Climatic factors have influenced the yield of sugar beet. It was observed that the precipitations in August had a positive influence on the yield of root (r=0,535). The produced quanity of sugar (t/ha) is directly connected with the yield of root per hectare (r = 0,915), while the content of sugar dind t demonstrate the expected success (r = 0,401). During the research period approximately 1,9 to 2,6 U/ha of seed were spent per year. The average consumption for the entire peterial expenses as folows: approximately 19 %. They amont to 3,0 - 5,5 % in total costs. The totally applied mineral fertilizers increased from 370 to 490 kg/ha. The nitrogen is applied in the amount of approximately 140 kg/ha. The yuantity of phosphorus was increased from 85 to 143 and of potassium from 150 to 200 kg/ha. The increase in prices of energy was accompanied with the increase in costs of mineral fertilizers. They amount to 33,2 - 43,4 % in the material expenses and to 7,0 - 10,6 % in total costs. The application of manure is extremely low. The costs of means of protection - that amount to approximately 50 % - form the major part of material expenses. The application of pesticides should be rationalized. In the production of sugar beet approximately 20 to 45 hours/ha of machinery activity were applied. The major part of works is carried out by tractors of medium size. The costs in regard to the machinery activity were increased at a growth rate of 2,42%. They are represented in direct costs as follows: 23,7 to 33,8 % and in total costs they amount even to 24,9 %. The hours of human labour are also high per ha. The indirect costs are also high. They can even amount to 30 % of total costs. The average yearly yield of sugar beet root was from 42,15 to 54,96 t/ha. The total average yield amounts to 45,72 t/ha with the coefficient of variations of 20,5 %.

    Held: from 09/03/95 to 09/07/95
Summary: Seed-sugar beet production in Croatia has a relatively long tradition: in began about 70 years ago. At the beginning they were produced seed of foreign cultivars in range of elite category, while later they have been used domestic cultivars. Also, earlier it was used 2-year cycle including seedlings, while in the least 35 years modern procedure has been use (1-year production without the seedlings). In general, there are exist a favourable environmental conditions for seed-sugar beet production in the continental part of Croatia. However, they are possible two types of environmental strresses as follows: freezing (factor of plant density reduction over 80 % in some years) as well as drought and heat stress (maturity acceleration and lower degree of seed quality due to small seed forming). In the least 25-year period, minimal air temperature were in ranges from -7,8 oC to 26,0 oC (Weather bureau Osijek): they are considerably below of winter tolerance of sugar beet. However, only in four years they were found minimal temperatures below of 20 oC (in total 9 days only). Higher both plant density and largeness of plants were in connection with higher degree of sugar beet tolerance towards winter to extent of 20 %. Also, the most resistant seedlings were those with properties as follows: root thickness in its hypocotyle part between 0,8 and 2,6mm, root weight between 15 and 30 g/plant and from 8 to 12 leaves development stage.

Summary: Almost entirely mechanized cycle of sugar beet production is possible by using of monogerminated seed. However, by sowing of these seed on final plant population density, it is needed hat each seed makes plant. Normal embryo and satisfied amount of seed storage substances (adequate seed largeness) are main conditions for forming of normal germ and of full developed plant. Influences of seed largeness (two fractions: from 3,25 to 3,50 mm and above 5,5 mm) on their quality (germination under laboratory and field conditions, dynamics of germination and quantity of water absorption during seed swelling) were tested in our study. By increasing of seed largeness, germinating was increased from 69,5 % on 94,7 %. By the deeper sowing (5-6 cm compared to 2-3 cm), field germinating was decreased from 82,3 % on 40,4 %. Smaller seed absorb more quickly water and they germinated earlier. However, dry weights of germs (g/100 of germs) were higher (from 2,4 to 3,7 vis-a-vis from 1,5 to 1,7) and germs were longer (from 3,0 to 3,7 cm vis-a-vis from 1,7 to 2,2 cm) as affected by larger seed fraction. Differences on level of same seed largeness are induced by sugar beet hybrids. However, in case of germinating, they did not found differences among hybrids.

Summary: The trials were set up on the field of sugar beet by a plan of full random block system in five repetitions on three localities (Virovitica, Đakovo, Osijek), two years (1991-1992). The influence of fertilization by nitrogen (control, 150 kg/ha added in one time, 200 kg/ha added in two times) combined with foliar fertilization by boron (8,4 kg/ha) or without foliar ferilization has been examined. After two phase harvest and seed cleaning a yield was determined whereas seed was separated per fractions (below 3 mm, 3,0-3,5 mm, 3,5-4,5 mm, 4,5-5,5 mm and obove 5,5 mm) in order to examine germination for each fraction, 1000 seed weight and single germination. The achieved results have been worked out statistically by F and LSD test, using computers. The examined variants of fertilization have not statistically significantly affected seed yield, although the differences in plant growth between the examined variants of fertilization by nitrogen during vegetation were very noticeable. Agrocological production conditions (soil type, year) had a significant influence on the yield. The best results have been achieved on semigley shernozem of Osijek locality and the worst on hypogley mineral soil of Virovitica area. Only on Đakovo locality fertilization by boron with increased nitrogen doses significantly affected seed germination increase by 8-10 % in relation to other fertilization variants while with other localities it was not proved. Weight of 1000 seeds was different per fertilization variants on Đakovo locality in 1991 and Virovitica in 1992 where fertilization by boron with increased nitrogen dose affected higher 1000 seeds weight while on other localities there wasn't significant influence of fertilization on this property. The examined variants of fertilization didn't affect a single germination. Considering seed yield, with all examined plots, the most representative were fractions: 4,5-5,5 mm(39,96%) and 3,4-4,5 mm (34,11 %). Since these fractions have the highest germination and single germination, they represent the most qualitative part of sugar beet seed yield.
