Summary: Replacement of conventional tall cultivars by semi-dwarf ones, contributed to a great extent to increased fertilization practice in wheat, and consequently increased wheat grain yield. At the same time increased use of N fertilisers has caused pollution of underground water and atmosphere, thus creating ecological problems. The pollution risk could be reduced by genetic change of wheat plant (breeding wheat cultivars suitable for sustainable agriculture), by introduction of legume species into crop rotation and significant changes of agricultural practice. The proposed objective is no longer maximum wheat yield, but rather rational and environmentally safe production (e.i. the obtaining a good compromise between production cost, yield and quality, while taking into account respect of the environment).

Research goals: 1. Searching for the new knowledge about plant/environment relationship (with special regards to soil), needed for development of ideotype of wheat plant for sustainable agriculture. 2. Development of the intercross population of wheat, with broad genetic variability and with cumulated genes for desirable agronomic traits. 3. Breeding of high quality wheat cultivars with constant grain yield in undesirable conditions of low mineral supply - cultivars suitable for sustainable agriculture.
