Summary: APAGE electrophoresis of gliadins was used for
identification of 1BL.1RS translocation in winter wheat hybrids VG-88.
Thirty samples of wheat hybrids VG-88 were electrophoretically analysed,
four kernels of each sample. 1BL.1BS translocation was established in nine
hybrids VG-88.

Summary: Twenty one (F10-F12) wheat sister lines and female
parent, all with the same HMW glutenin subunits composition 2*, 7+9, 5+10
were tested on yield and breadmaking traits. All of 21 selected progeny
lines had much better yielding ability (7.13-8.33 t/ha) than female parent
(6.21 t/ha), but remained behind in protein concentration (12.0-14.5%
versus 17.7% of female parent), and all other quality traits. A number of
wheat lines had protein yield (t/ha) value higher than female parent,
indicating acceptable improvement in combined traits: grain yield and grain
protein concentration. Significant difference in grain protein
concentration as well as in protein yield was determined in wheat sister
lines having the same HMW glutenin subunits composition, which indicates
that grain proteins are coded by some other loci too. Significant variation
for rheological traits within wheat sister lines having the same HMW
glutenin subunits composition indicates that after fixation of the most
convenient HMW glutenin subunits, sufficient variation for all traits still
remains available to the breeder.
Selection based solely on average effects of glutenin alleles would
exploit only a main partition of the available genetic variation. Remaining
variability should be further improved by phenotypiclly based selection.

Summary: As a result of our breeding effort directed toward improwed
bread making quality and toward breeding cultivars suitable for sustainable
agriculture, a new winter wheat line VG-90-HP has been developed. With
favourable HMW glutenin subunits composition (2*,7+9,5+10) resulting in
elevated grain proteins (15-18%), elevated sedimentation value (50-70 ccm),
and excellent rheological characteristics it is the best quality wheat ever
grown in our regions. VG-90-HP has low requirement for fertilization, it is
suitable for extremely late planting, and stree condition where often
express better yield than standard high yielding wheat cultivars. The
cultivar is suitable for sustainable agriculture. Lower inputs cost, and
better selling price of high quality grain are the main characteristics
atractive for wheat growers.

Summary: Of about 250 thousands species of flowering plants, only
about 3000 are exploited by man. However, by far the largest amount of food
for human beings is today supplied by only 20 different crop species. Small
number of crop species used make the human race very susceptible to
unexpected changes of environment. About 10000 BC ven man began harvesting
the first domesticated plants the earth's population was around 4 millions.
Today that many people born evry ten days. If the trend continues beyond
the 2000, we will have to grow as much food in the first two decades of the
new century as was produced ower the past 10 thousands years. In relation
with this facts, the possibilities and prospects of sustainable agriculture
as a principa source of food was discussed.

Summary: In bread wheat (T.aestivum) cv. Pitoma sterile and deformed
spikes have been found, which were treated as atypical in seed production.
The frequency of these spikes arise from higher to lower categories of seed
crop. By using the methods of differential staining (Giemsa C-banding and
Chromomycin A3). A changes in the structure of chromosomes have been
observed in all atypical spikes: decreased mitotic index value, chromosomal
bridges, tripolar spindles, restitution nucleus. Due to low frequency of
such phenomena their existence has been connected with activity of
herbicide Dicuran (R) forte 80 WP. A possibility of action of genetic
factors such as heterozigous 1B/1R chromosomal translocations have not been
completely eliminated.

Summary: Computer program for use in plant breeding, analyses the
data from field experiments sown according to "Honeycomb method" designed
by Fasoulas (1988). The comparisons could be performed between neighbor
plants, and in this way the effects of soil heterogenity could be
eliminated. The method is usseful in breeding plant species normaly sown on
distance, and the computer program accelerate selection of plus variants.
