Summary: When creating new maize (Zea mays L.) populations and
improving the present ones, we tend to inkorporate domestic germplasms to
ellite American "Corn belt" material. In this way, by applying adequate
methods of combining breeding, we haveextended and improved genetic basis
of the Institute's material for selection. The project is based on three
genetically opposed populations: OS 57,OS 58 and OS 1 either. Each
population is subjected first to mass selection for the traits of
highheritability and then to recurrent selection with the application of
the early test in the S3 generation. One cycle lasts for fourto five
years. The best specific line combinations are applied at the Committee
for futher testing and registration at the Varietal List.
Research goals: The objectives are to: a) create maize (Zea mays L.)
populations which are well adapted to the conditions of Eastern Croatia;
b) create self-pollinated lines to be used i) for the formation of
futher cycles of selection ii) for the creation of the F1 commercial
hybrids. A) The following maize populations were created till 1991: i)
OS 57: the populations of the "Stiff stalk" genotype consisting of the
Mn AS5 and Mn AS7 synthetics, as well as of five self-pollinated OS
lines that originate from domestic populations bred: Vukovarski zuban
and Korićev brzak; ii) OS 68: the populations of the "Lancaster"
genotype consisting of the Mn AS8 and Mn AS6 synthetics, as well
as of five self-pollinated lines that originate from the OS
population of Helminthisporium turcicum rez sib 64; iii) OS 1 either:
the population consisting of 12 OS self-pollinated lines which are
genetically opposed to the populations OS % & and OS 68. B) 650 to
700 lines a year are used in the process of self-pollination from the S0
to the S10 generation. In 1995, anew cycle, i.e. new populations will
be created of the lines that originate from the above-mentioned OS
populations. Aproximately 2000 to 2500 line hybrids a year were tested in
field trials from 1991 to 1993; out of these, 22 hybrids were applied at
the Committee and 15 hybrids have been registered at the Croatian
Varietal List.
