Summary: Fourteen experimental maize hybrids were grown on three
soilsof the Slavonia province. The E 943 hybrid had the highest grainyield,
while the hybrids E 1032, E 1041 and E 1043 belonged tothe group of the
lowest grain yields. However, the some hybrids(for example E 905, E 1034
and 1048) had a very specific respones
depending on the soil type. The percentages of lodging and femalesteril
plants were very dependent on both the soil and genotipecharacteristics.
For example, there were not lodging incidenceson pseudoglay, but maize
plants were in mean by approximately 40%shorter compared to two other
soils. In general, the 1990 growingseason was characterized by a drought.
In this respect, west part(exp. 3) recived about 50 mm more precipitation
compared to theeast part of the Slavonia province (exp. 1 and 2).

Summary: The trials with selected maize hybrids, FAO 100-300,
werecarried out on test fields of the Osijek Agricultural Institutefrom
1986 to 1990. The objective was to analyze the yield ofkarnels as affected
by length of vegetation period, which wasdevided into the period from
germination to flowering and theperiod from flowering to the physiological
maturity. The resultsobtained have shown that in the first three production
years, only the period from germination to flowering affected signifficantly
the level of grain yield (r= 0.305** to 0.361**).However, in 1989, both
periods had highly significant effect ongrain yield (r1.3= 0.444**, r2.3=
0.512**). The period fromgermination to flowering did not have significant
effects ongrain yield obtained in 1990 due to the intensive drought andhigh
temperatures. The determination coefficients (r2) werehighly significant in
all production years, ranging from 0.126**to 0.455**. This confirms that
the periods observed contributedhighly to the final level of grain yield
obtained. Variations inthe length of vegetation in hybrids across the years
were foundto be slight, unlike the variations in yield, which were
moreexpressed as the climatic conditions for the worse, (C.V. 11.11%to
20.62%). Multiple regression testing was done for each year, indicating that
the length of vegetation had highest effect onyield in 1989 (by1= 234.41,
by2= 270.40).

Summary: Nine maize hybrids were studied in 12 trials
(environments)established in the Slavonia and Barania province in the
1990growing season, which will always be refered to as an arid
one.Environments were simulated by combination of plant numbers perhectare
and irrigation. The maize hybrid B 73 x Mo 17 was used asa standard. The
variance analyisis for each environment wasperformed and the stability
parameters expressed as regressioncoefficients (bi) and mean square
deviations from regression(s2di) were determined. Duncan's test was used to
testing meangrain yields for each enviroment and across the
enviroments.Significant mean differences were found among both
theenviroments and the hybrids. Also, a significant enviroment xhybrid
interaction was detected. In all trials, the hybrids OSSK502 and OSSK 552
had significantly higher mean yields than otherhybrids and the cross B 73 x
Mo 17. The hybrid OSSK 552 belongedto the "A" rank in all environments. The
stability parameters, which were expressed as the coefficient regression
(bi),indicated that the hybrids included in the trials did not showany
significant differences and that their coefficients did notdeviate much
from 1, meaning that they were stable one andconsistent with the mean
yields of the environments. Thecriterion for hybrid stability, expressed as
the mean squaredeviations (s2di) indicated that the hybrids OSSK 552, OSSK
631and OSSK 502 had values close to zero.

Summary: An experiment was established on test fields of
theAgricultural Institute Osijek in 1989 with three FAO groups ofmaturity
and with eight inbred lines of maize (Zea mais L.)within each FAO group.
Domestic and introduced inbred lines usedin this investigation gave high
yields. They had good agronomictraits this material is expected to perform
in the seedproduction. The significant differences between the
combinationsof crosses and also significant effect on the general (GCA)
andspecific (SCA) combining ability in the three examined FAO groupsof
crosses were found. The inbred lines of maize withsignificantly higher
average yields of their crosses andsignificant effect of GCA for the same
trait were: A 676, OS87-44, KR 651, OS 87-24, OS 84-49 and OS 87-56. These
resultshave indicated that we have to make selection and test theinbreds
and their hybrids under the conditions or in areas wherewe intent to
establish maize production.

Summary: Breeding of early maize hybrids was analyzed through
theinterdependance of the kernel yield, the water content in kernelsand the
requirement for the heat units (GDU). The water contentin kernels (r=
0.251** - 0.700**) as well as the sum of heatunits from the emergence to
flowering (r= 0.368** - 0.682**)affected the yield significantly in all
years of theinvestigation. The determination coefficients were significant
inall years, ranginig from 0.208** to 0.604**. The testing ofmultiple
regression indicated that regarding the requirements forheat units, the
yield obtained was effected most by the sum ofheat units (GDU) from the
emergence to flowering (by2= 7.87 -31.39). The highest variations within
the hybrids across theyears were found for the yield (K.V. 14.64 - 17.52%)
and thewater content in kernels (K.V. 11.10 - 20.87%).

Summary: During a three-year trial with 12 inbred lines of
maize, thetraits of kernel, ear and stem as well as the number of days
fromthe emergence to silking were observed in the region of Osijek. It was
found that the climatic conditions, a type of lineincluded in the tests and
their interactions had a pronouncedeffect on all traits under observation.
Constant values of the traits of ear and stem were found infollowing
lines: OS 86-39, OS 64-9, H 109 and OS 86-95. Thethree-year means for 1000
- kernel weight did not varyconsiderably in the A676 and OS 138-9 lines on
the one hand, andfor the number of days from the emergence to silking in
the OS85-22 and H 109 lines on the other.

Title: VARIABILITY IN DROUGHT RESISTANCE AND CORRELATIONS OF
CERTAIN TRAITS WITH YIELDS IN SEVERAL MAIZE INBRED LINES
Faculty: Agronomski fakultet Zagreb Sveučilište u Zagrebu
Date of defense: 12/03/93
Language: hrvatski
Number of pages: 59
Summary: This paper deals with elite maize inbred lines
responsefollowing certain traits to natural drought, as well as
thecorrelations among certain traits and the yield of kernels.
Twelve domestic ( OS 163-9, OS 338-9, OS 580 F, OS 86-96, OS373, OS
64-9, OS 2-9) and foreign ( B 73, MO 17, B 37, A 619, W64 A), FAO maturiti
group 400-700, have been tested. The lineswere grown in trials in the
region of Osijek, Karanac andFeričanci in 1989. and 1990. These lokations
have differed inpedological conditions for production. The drought stresses
inthe two growing seasons were different - the 1990 growing seasonhad a
larger drought stress compared to the 1989 growing season.
The following traits have been analyzed: the number of daysfrom
emergence to tasseling and silking, the difference in thenumber of days
from tasseling to silking, the plant hight up tothe ear and the tassel, the
number of leaves, as well as thegrain weight per field. Following the
results of the statisticalanalysis, the differences among the lines in
their traits, andthe variation of the traits across the locations and the
yearwere found. The correlation coefficients among certain traits andthe
yield, as well as the yield stability have been calculated.
According to the variance analysis for traits underobservation,
considerable differences were detected among thegenotypes tested, as well
as a great influence of the locationand the year on them.
The traits tested and the yield in particular varied moreacross the
years than the locations.
The correlation of the grain weight per field and othertraits was
highly significant for all traits. The plant heigh upto the tassel and ear
was positively correlated with yield. Onthe other hand, a negative
correlation was found between:firstly, the number of days from emergence to
tasseling andsilking, and, secondly, the difference in the number of days
fromtasseling to silking. According to Romer- Orphal'sclassification the
plant hight was in a strong correlation withyield, the plant hight up to
the ear in a middle, the number ofdays from emergence to silking and the
number of days fromtasseling to silking in a weak correlations, the number
of daysfrom emergence to tasseling and the number of leaves in a veryweak
correlations.
The lines OS 86-96, OS 580 F, OS 373 and OS 64-9 were foundto be the
high-yielding and stable ones, where as the lines OS163-9, B 73, MO 17, OS
338-9, B 37, A 619, W 64 A and OS 2-9 haveattained lower yields than
average of trials. In same time thecoefficient of variations for yield for
thouse lines wasgreateaer than field mean.
