Summary: In the process of breeding winter wheat superior lines
selected previously are used as basic material. Further increase of
yielding capacity and improvement of grain and flour quality is
accomplished by means of the traits that are components of yield
(increased rows of spikelets, higher 1000-kernel weight) and the traits
that determine flour quality (increased protein content, increased gluten
quality). By incorporating genes of resistance (tolerance) to major
diseases (black stem rust, powdery mildew, Septoria disease, Fusaria
diseases), higher yield stability is assured. In the 1991-1993 period the
follwing new varieties were registered: Melita (1991), Davork (1991), Olga
(1993), Sandra (1993), Rina (1993), Tina (1993), Darka (1993), Sutla
(1993) and Rugvica (1993). Some of these recently released varieties have
already been accepted by agricultural practice.
Research goals: The investigation is aimed at developing winter
wheat varietiesand lines with incorporated genes for high yield, good
grain andflour quality, resistance (tolerance) to major diseases
anddifferent climatic stresses, in order to assure as high yieldstability
as possible and increased adaptability of a variety. Our results achieved
so far are known both to scientific workersand wheat growers. ZG winter
wheat varieties are grown in allwheat-growing regions of the country and
have considerablycontributed to the increase of average yield in this
country. Oneof the high-yielding varieties is Sana, which serves as
astandard for yield in trials of official committees in Croatiaand
Hungary. During the last 30 years, 48 winter wheat varietiesdeveloped by
this Institute have been registered by the officialcommittee, of which
some (8) are reigstered in the neighbouringEuropean countries (Italy,
Czechoslavakia, Hungary). At present,a number of new lines are in the
process of registration: Croatia(36), Hungary (8), Slovenia (4).
