Summary: "One Hundred Continual Plots in Croatia" is an
international project of a multidisciplinary character. So far the first
phase of the research has been accomplished, i.e. in various ecosystems all
over Croatia one hundred continual plots have been located and marked by a
sign of the Zagreb University. "Comparative research of the ecosysteme in
Croatia" is a plan and programme involving the wider international project
titled "Man and Biosphere". The realization of the task will entail three
periods: 1. Establishment of a network of continual plots in Croatia
encompassing the natural and anthropogenic ecosystems in all
phytogeographic parts of the country; biocenological and ecological
characterization of the ecosystems, the "initial" and "zero" states having
thus been assessed. The 1977-1990 work involved 43 scientists from the
fields of biology, forestry, hydrology, geology etc., out of which
twenty-five had PHD, eight Master s and ten Engineer s titles. 2. A
multidisciplinary long-term research on the structure, dynamics, function
and metabolism of the ecosystem began in 1991 and is estimated to last
until the year 2010. 3. The synthesis of the results.
Keywords: Continual plot, vegetation, ecology, climate, biomass, stand structure.
Research goals: A long-term observance of the functioning and
metabolism of the forest ecosystems is the aim of the reserch carried out
for scientific assessment of the needs to improve these ecosystems
structures and functioning. Begun in 1991, the second phase encompasses the
realization of the long-term scientific research programme agreed upon at
the 1975 Symposium, proportional to our staff and financial potentials. The
ecosystem research programme on permanently protected plots is
interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary, i.e. it encompasses the abiotic
and biotic components: the physical/chemical properties of the parent
material; the physical/chemical and biological properties of the soil;
synecology; the composition, structure and dynamics of the ecosystem in
general. This will be realized in dependence with both staff and financial
possibilities, and will involve the collaboration of various experts from
the fundamental disciplines such as biology, geology, pedology and others
that are indispensable for this kind work. The already obtained results
reveal the fundamental indices of the ecosystem s functioning. They should
be further observed to discover how the nature itself manages, maintains
and regenerates its ecosystems without man s interference. On the other
hand, comparative plots should be established in the man-managed
ecosystems, in order to make conclusions and answer the question: Are
Croatian forests being managed properly or should certain activies be
either stimulated or slowed down. Other information about the project.
