Summary: This article deals with research data on the damage to stands oftrees caused by the felling, processing and hauling of timber ina 47-year-old stand consisting of beech, bay oak and hornbeam onBilogora. Five methods were compared for the cutting and haulingtimber. Indices of tree damage were as follows: economicimportance, tree location, cause of damage, type and site ofdamage, extent of damaged bark and condition of damaged tree. Theamplitude of damage is indicated by the ratio between the numberof damaged trees and all remaining trees in the stand. Theseelements were confirmed for 24 examples of surfaces aftercompletion of work. In the cutting, processing and hauling oftimber, 8,2 % of the remaining trees were damaged. Damage due tothe cutting and processing of timber had significantly moreserious consequences than that caused by hauling.

Summary: The following work factors have been studied for four methods offelling and processing of wood in thinnings: work productivity, fuel consumption of power saw, daily noise exposure of workers, tree damage in felling, primary wood conversion and skidding.Field research was carried out in a 47-year-old montane mixedstand. Detailed survey encompassed 1542 trees within 47 workingdays (272 workers-days). The consumption of fuel and lubricationoil per 1 m3 decreases with greater proportion of multi-meterstacked wood in m3 of processed timber and longer woodassortiments. With all methods of felling and processing, dailywork with power saw (99-164 min) was within the allowed limitis. The average daily noise exposure of a worker was 100 db(A). Infelling, primary wood conversion and skidding of timber 8,2 % ofthe remaining trees were damage. The size of damage grows inproportion with higher mechanization. The size and structure ofthe damage depend on the skidding equipment, the way of formingthe load and the art of hauled assortments.

Summary: The paper is a summarized presentation of the joint research ondifferent issues related to forest work in Croatia. Discussed arethe trends and the volume of the work on the biological forestreproduction. Based on physical and financial indices of theannual plan of a forest management, the possibilities forsatisfying the increasing needs for biological reproduction ofthe forest have been evaluated. Further on, there are the resultsof studying the physical exortion of forest workers duringhabitat preparation and young trees care. New knowledge on someconsequences of applying machines and equipment in forestryproduction has been analyzed. It has been established that about15 % of trees are damaged when the existing technologies andorganization of forest operations are existing technologies andorganization of forest operations are applied. About one third ishigh increment-reducing damage. Thus is the stand value reducedby less than 2 %.

Summary: A long-term possible enhancement of the forest workproductability through mechanization has greatly been exhausted.Further improvement seems to lie in more productible human workin the forest. However, it is the human resources that willincrease the forest work productability above the expected 20 %.Such targets will be reached by those who will be able to offerthe work forms that will exploit the great worker's capacitiesand also to meet their sophisticated requirements. Swedishforestry science is as usual ahead of others in suggesting theways towards these targets.

Summary: The management method in the selection forests of Gorski kotarinfluences the irregularity of the felling volume distributionover the whole department area. This is particulary the case inmanagement of the concentrated felling, such as the so-calledcircle cut. By establishing the gravitation areas, which throughtheir real felling volume and the distance from the gravitationpoint to the lorry track, considerably influence the mean haulingdistance, it is possible to obtain the distances of theindividual strip roads and their distribution in the felling areaby gradual planning and building of new strip roads. The obtaineddistances of the individual stip roads and their sdistributionare used for calculation of the parameters by the Arnautović.

Summary: While establishing a forest road neetwork of optimal density withleast total transportation costs, even and regular distributionof felling volume over the whole department surface is one of theassumptions. Since this assumption is fulfilled in the presentcircumstances of selection forests, particulary in groupwise andfelling-concentrated managements, gradual elimination of thehighest ground-skidding to the tracks or roadside landing bybuilding of new skidding tracks has been presented in this paper.By analyzing the sum of the products of actual felling volume onthe elementary surfaces and the skidding distances to theroadsize landings or tracks, and by establishing thegravitational areas that will by means of track-building reallycontribute to the reduction of the mean ground-skidding distance, special skidding tracks distribution over the department surfacewill be achieved.

Summary: Mechanized procedures continue at different levels. The decisionon introducing new variants of work methods at different levelsof mechanization is usually followed by an evaluation study ofwork and transport means. At this different properties are usedto define the characteristics in terms of work, energy, morphology, the comparison of which will help to establish theposition of the newly suggested machines and vehicles as to theones in earlier work variants. Such investigation is especiallyimportant for the work means used in skidding in stand thinnings.

Summary: The monitoring of the chain saws' exploitation characteristics can essentially contribute to the optimization of their life time and also diminish the total cocst of forest utilization. At the same time, the monitoring of both, the noise and vibrations levels and the chain breaking time, increases the operator's safety considerably. Therefore complex research work was on and several chain saw types of the two most frequently used products in the Republic of Croatia. The condition was that they were all used in forest utilization under the fairly same conditions over the period of 1 to 4 years. At the same time, measurements were carried out on the brand new chain saws, too.

Summary: The paper describes chief instruments of forest production and their ergonomic requirements. The level of mechanization in the forestry production differs from high in logging and roadbuilding to a considerably lower one in silviculture, where nursery production stnads out with the level of mechanization equalling that of agriculture. Ergonomic requirements greatly depended on the attitude of a particular social environment towards work safety. Some ergonomic requirements take the form of standards, recommendations or agreements. The chain saw is characterized not only by ergonomic-technical properties but also by mass, noise and vibration. Over the past three and a half decades each of these parameters has come to conform to stricter and stricter requirements.

Summary: The Croatian forest products most commonly produced are commercial wood in the form of timber and logs for sawmills and other wood industries and industrial wood for chip board, etc. as well as fuelwood including a little percent of chips for energy purposes. Potential raw material sources for fuel wood are bark, by-products and wood residues from the forest industry; raw material directly from forest operations and other types of raw material originating from wood. The history of forest chip production in Croatia is a good illustration of the conflicting issues of timber, energy and economy. After ten years of trying to organize production of secondary energy, we have now entered a new decade in which the nature of energy is being redefined.
