Summary: For successful breeding and selection of domestic animals
it is necessary to know the genetic structure of breeds and genotypes. By
carrying out breeding programmes specific animals, lines and families are
protected. There is a danger of inbreeding and genetic drifting as well as
the loss of some genes. This is particulary marked in small populations of
endangered breeds (Istrian cattle, Buša, Ruda sheep, Turopoljska pig and
others). Observing the genetic structure of herds is carried out by
applying indirect methods of gene frequency analysis of individual
polymorphic loci and blood gruops. Within the proposed five year project
the genetic structure of breeds of cattle and endangered sheep breeds in
Croatia are investigated. This is a direct contribution to getting
acquainted with the purity of a breed, the level of kinship and
relationship and the wealth of genes in the population of active,
autochtonous (endangered) breeds. The results of the investigations are
used as the base for forming gene collections of the endagered breeds-
Buša, Istrian cattle, Ruda and Prameneka sheep, Turopoljska and Pfeifer pig
and others. So far protein polymorphisms of blood and milk in the Istrian,
Slavonian-Podolic and Simmental cattle have been studied. Nucles of gene
collections "in situ" have been established for the Istrian and
Slavonian-Podolian cattle and Turopolje pig.
Research goals: To determine the current state of genetic protein
polymorphisms of blood (transferrin, posttransferrin,haemoglobin,
postalbumin and others), including the enzimes (amylase, carboanhydrase),
and milk (ŕ-, á- and k-casein, á-lactoglobulin and ŕ-lactalbumin) in the
breeds as well as significant pheno- (geno-) types of cattle in Croatia.
This will help in defining the current genetic structure i.e. the purity of
the breed. Establishing the present gene frequencies will contribute to
understanding the level of relationship between the breeds, the
justifications of defining certain breeds and the endangerment of some
genes due to sampling. Practical production benefit will be achieved in a
short time by getting to know the correlation of some types and frequencies
of protein with the production characteristics of the cattle. This will
improve the choice of sires and dams in the national breeding program.
Some cattle breed are in danger of extinction. They are the autochtonous
low productive breeds. Their protection has a genetic (keeping natural
variability), philological, etnografic, ethic, productive and other
significance. The project will include systematic work on "ex situ" and "in
situ" protection. This will be carried out by establishing herd nucleus in
the autochtonous environment an by freesing semen and embryos. The
priority in forming gene collections is geven to the Istrian and
Slavonian-Syrmian Podolian cattle, the Turopolje and black Slavonian
(Pfeifer) pig, the Hrvatica hen and other breeds.
